I didn't explain myself correctly. You should use the battery for the 12v source, with a relay tapped into an "ignition-on" circuit such as the fuel or ignition systems. Obviously, you wouldn't want to run the power off those circuits, but a relay is the "correct" way to do it. Alternatively, you can just tap it directly into another source like your radio or one of your column wires.
