Mod recommendations for 87 GT

Thanks for the input guys.

I am currently in the process of undoing what 4 yrs of storage does to a car. All fluids are getting changed. New Heater core, fixing previous owners hack jobs.

The car already looks low enough to me with the GT skirts, so i'm gonna leave the suspension alone.

I think I'll probably go with 3.73s, better exhaust, bump the timing a little and leave it at that for now. I'm under a tight budget (saving for school) so the motor won't be getting anything serious any time soon.

Whats the best value when it comes to headers? Somehting that is good quality, fits well and isn't rediculously expensive.

I am going to have the Cats removed and then I'll see how it sounds, it's pretty quiet right now.

BLAM! He hit it right on the nose! BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING TO THIS CAR, you need to convert it to MASS AIR. Buy the wiring kit and a ECM. It's pointless to do any hard mods or even bolt ons if the Speed density ECM isn't going to learn-up for you.

hmmmmmmmm.....................read my sig, still Speed Density and no aftgermarket tuning has been done - just a bump in timing and fuel pressure.

I guess SD can adapt - what do you think?

NO it can't. Yes, you can play with timing and fuel pressure. But thats about it. As for Mike85000 you don't have to listen but you will be wasting money on H/C/I mods with the SD system. The EEC-III system is simply a spec chart. All the ECM knows is that at a given pressure, pulse width and ignition timing should be X and Y. Then once it goes into closed loop O2 sensors come into play. The EEC-4 system takes a live reading of what is actually comming into the intake and has the ability to adjust with more mods. But its your car do what you want.

No it is not. O2 sensors do not sense what is comming into the engine, but how much fuel is being burned. They help narrow down the long term fuel trim to acheive the stoichiometric fuel ratio 14.7:1. They relate more to emission control than performance.

that's right, but when you increase the flow into the engine it will liklely run lean at all speeds and the long term trim will adjust for the increased fuel needs. All rpm operation at less than the WOT will get trimmed if lean long enough (short term trim vs long term). Then, the long term trim multiplier carries over into open loop opereation as well. Add that to the tendency of SD to run richer up top and you get the benefit of the adpative feature in tuning for increased power levels. It works, it worked on mine.

For a budget build, I suggest porting the intake, gears, K&N panel filter and gutting the stock H. You can just use a pipe and beat the cat till there isn nothing left. Shop around for gear installs, they can run a few hundred for the gears and install. At this point rockers won't help much becaust the stock springs aren't going to accomodate them well and headers aren't going to really shine till you get heads. For the price of 200-300 dollar shorties, you should either put those towards some aluminium heads or towards some long tubes for a full exhaust. Do it right and do it once.

If my car does not have adaptive control, then tell me why my SD car runs so well and makes good power afger my mods.....

Ever read any of Mike Wesley's stuff on this? Know who Mike is?

My apologies sir. :hail2: I have read some of wesley's stuff and recently refreshed my memory on this. SD does have "some" adaptive control. I guess I don't see much point in arguing this anyway since the guy that posted the thread already said he didn't care.

Wow. Tons of controversy on the SD vs MAF topic.

Basically, I'm going to stick with the SD setup until I do more serious mods to the engine.

Probably a stupid question, but with the stock fuel system, is there somewhere to adjust the pressure, or is that only an option with an aftermarket setup? Also, si there any benefit on a near stock engine to bump up the pressure?

I think I'm going to stick with Timing, exhaust and a K&N for now. Those mods along with the gears shoul keep me happy for this the drag this summer.

Not going to get into a big discussion but i will say that mustang65luvr is more right than wrong. It is possible to get gains from the SD but because of the limited range of adaptive stratagy the substantial modifications such as H/I/C may show gains but never reach there full potiential with SD. Call Rick at Anderson Ford if you need more convincing, he has been in the tune buisness for a long time and can give u all the info u could ever need on the subject.
