I still run Speed Density. I don't see a reason that it needs to be a first modification to a car. The Speed Density setup in stock form is more aggressive than the mass air tune. Why else do the 87-88 cars have a rep for being faster in stock trim than 89+ cars.
I'm not saying don't convert to Mass Air at all. I myself have a mass air conversion waiting to go on my car, but I'm just saying I don't think it's one of the first mods that needs to be done. I have a ton of bolt-ons on my '88 and it still idles smooth, revs freely and smoothly and makes tons of power.
