My LS1 Notch Project (DUW)

how many n/a 4.6's are making 400 at the tires?

Well, since the 4.6L was thrown in ..... Ben, let's go back to that HP per liter conversation. Who wins now?

I'll leave the 03-04 Cobra out of this .... since it really can be considered to have a 6.4L (remember, positive displacement).

So, just take the '02 SS. And since it has an aluminum block .... we'll compare the '03 Mach 1. After Ford's revision, the Mach 1's were rated at 310 bhp (67.4 HP per liter). The SS is rated at 325 bhp (57 HP per liter .... not even reaching 1 HP per c.i.). BTW, both cars were underated, so that's another factor.

Just useless information. There's really no way to do a true comparison, as there are too many factors. Even with the info posted above, yes, I do still believe the LS-? engines are far superior because of GM's dedication & technology.

Also Ben, I too believe Ford dropped the ball. But they started with another one. How many years did it take GM to get what they have? Where does Ford stand on that time scale with the 4.6L? Only time will tell. :D

i agree for the most part justin, the LS1 is not stellar in stock form. however start throwin some aftermarket parts at it and watch it make some power(the same reason the 5.0 became a legend). outside of forced induction the same cannot be said about the 4.6.

i just get all riled up now cuz its time for a engine change in my car and i would love to swap in the latest and greatest from FOMOCO. i just can't justify throwin down all that jack on a 4.6 to go marginally faster---it makes me mad.

time will tell and they did a good job with the new GT500(still a cobra in my book) making the engine a 5.4. i still wonder where they have those '00 cobra r heads stashed at and if we will see those again. if they manage to surface at a reasonable price i might think twice about an all motor 8k rpm cammed out 4.6.

this has really turned into an interesting discussion....good work fella's

There really is no discusion. The LS1 motor is superior and every way. Think about it, a h/c LS1 can make 470+rwhp, thats at the stock 346 cubic inches! Seeing a ford 347 over 400rwhp is very rare..

It took ford until 2003 to finally make a GREAT motor, the 03 cobra 4v motor. While GM was making the LS1 since 98 in the camaros/firebirds.

1997 in the Corvette first, so you know the research was done for a long time prior to its introduction.

Definitely interesting thread and an interesting car. I am amazed at how he got it all put together and WORKING in such a short time!

You know 50% of the reason I picked the Mustang over the Camaro (I owned both in the past). The sound.

The mustang 5.0 to me is the meanest sound to ever hit the pavement. I remember hearing them at the track when I had my Z28 and felt like I was missing out. So that's 1/2 the reason I chose a stang over a Z second time around.

I commend Ford for what they are doing with the 4.6/5.4. I am not a big fan of the 2v 4.6/5.4's but the PI ones were ok. The 4v mods are a hellova nice setup. Put a good n/a 4v into a fox and those suckers run DAMN good. There is a guy local here that has a few engine mods (realy not many) 97 or 98 cobra with susp. and runs in the high 11's N/A.

The biggest thing I like in regards to talk about technology, what other large scale car maker (other than the uber' $$$ exotics) has a 3 & 4 valve OHC v8 and not just in some of the v8 makes but as the std. v8 no less. It is sure not "old tech" going this route.

Saying that I would have liked to see Ford drop some coin on a pushrod but I really think the 4v and 3v setups esp. if they would start with something "legendary" like a 302 would be great in the not to distant future.

The LS1 is great but I really have seen a good bit of oil control issues and I dont get the impression they will be running strong as say the many 200k 5.0s do.

I am glad we have these hard choices/arguments still, and I would take any 4.6 dohc, 5.0, or LSx v8.

I will have an LS1 Fbody soon...plan on buying one in January or later. No, I'm not selling the 5.0. It'll turn into a a real toy-only. I plan on doing lid and catback to the LS1 and enjoying it as an AWESOME daily.

They ****ing rock, period...though I do think that internet forums have kind of over-hyped them; not so much anymore, but 3 or 4 years ago people acted like they simply couldn't be beat.

I have never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever heard a camaro guy talk like this about an sn. I like the power plant on the ss and even the body style, but if it's not an ss, it looks nasty. I do agree that if FORD would of come up with a bad ass power plant, no one would buy a camaro.

Switching to OHC-tech was a wise decision for Ford. And all GM does is put bigger and bigger engines in their cars.

What do 3V GTs dyno at? ~280WHP? For 4.6L compared to 5.7L? The results are there.

Now the LS1 vs the 5.0 and the Modular is no comparison, the LS1 is a beast, the only reason I went with the Mustang instead of the Camaro was because I needed a daily driver and the build quality of the GM was GARBAGE, it felt extremely cheap, windows, door handles, the things that constitute CAR before RACING MACHINE weren't up to snuff. The whole interior CRASHED over bumps in the road. The money and engineering was clearly spent on the engine and not the car as a whole.

If/When Ford steps up their 4.6 to a 5.4 in the GTs we will see some awesome power numbers.
