PCV or breather???

im finishing up my stroker project, its a N/A 331 setup with 10:5:1 compression, .598 lift comp cam, AFR185 58cc, scorpion 1.6's, and an RPM II. i am not sure if i should run a breather cap or the stock PCV. i have deleted the smog pump, charcoal cannister, and egr... any suggestions???
 
i have a whipple SC on my s197. i did plumb in a catch can into the pcv system, but have since put in breathers instead. it runs fine, i cant tell any difference, but it does look cleaner and less stuff in the engine area. i like it better w/ the breathers.
 
The PCV is more efficient (active scavenging), so I'd keep it if you can. If it's overwhelmed and you don't wish to add a second PCV valve (etc), then do the breathers and ditch the PCV.
 
The nice thing about the PCV is that it runs the corrosive crankcase gasses back through the engine, they get burned, and dumped out with the exhaust (I'm sure you knew that, but I'm just reiterating). A breather just leaves them to hang around in your engine bay, and eventually deposits or drips form around and under the breather. The breather looks cool, but the PCV system works better and actually cleaner in the long run. That and, like stated above, the PCV system sort of "sucks" the gasses out of the crankcase, where a breather just lets them float out as they come, which can theoretically shorten the life of your oil.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with a breather, a PCV system is just a nicer option.

It has the full stock PCV system still in place, but the passenger valve cover has a breather instead of being connected to the TB like the stock system. Seems to run ok like this. Still trying to research and decide if I should just leave it this way or somehow rig up a system similar to the stock system with the oil filler neck and tube going to the TB. My current valve covers do not have the filler neck.

I'd say to run a PCV setup if you can as well.

I'd say you should get the right valve covers and run the system as it is designed to be run. Just make sure what ever valve covers you get clear your roller rockers. Although, I wonder if you'd be able to adapt this.

Probably could. I've looked into something like this as well...but can't tell if that is a PCV valve in there or not. The last thing I want is that opening to be a one way opening since my understanding of the crank ventilation is that it relies on that opening to be capable of two way air flow. Obviously something baffled would be nice to slow down oil splash.

My car leaks oil really bad out of the PCV/oil fill grommets on the valve covers. Anyone know why? I'm thinking of trying out a second PCV on the oil fill side?



Are the grommets any good? When I bought mine it was leaking pretty bad there too. The grommet on the breather was pretty chewed up. Popped in a replacement and it stopped.

Do you have any baffles under the valve covers?

From what I've read so far, I'd think you'd want to add another PCV on the drivers side, not the oil fill side. That side is generally thought to need the air to flow in both directions which will not happen with a PCV. Of course, I could be completely off base here.

The Tech Sticky up top has that good writeup on adding a second PCV valve if you so decide.

The separator is a step in the right direction, but it won't FIX the problem.

It will help determine if the oil really is entering the intake via the pcv though. And it will help quantify how much oil is being pulled into the intake......

i'm going to use the stock system on mine also. but i bought the trick flow EFI intake so where do i get the screen at the rear of the lower intake or what is it called when i hit the parts store. peace

could have just got one from home depot for like $10 instead of the $40-$50 steeda wants.

Dang yo should have asked me. 91 is right pretty cheap at homo depot but a -10 AN line to a catch can is the way to go imo.

jason, i think i should be ok, i havent run the engine yet im just trying to stop the problem before i have it. i think its only a serious problem with FI cars but we'll see...

It isn't only forced induction.... and it should only be forced induction if the pcv system is setup WRONG.
That is why I have a thread on setting up a second pcv in the 'tech thread index' for a n/a stroker engine.............

If you haven't run the motor yet... I wouldn't worry too much.
