Quad Shock Rubbing in 17x9 Cobras

Hey Guys I did a 5 lug swap with Ranger Axles and drums using 03 17x9 Cobras and did not expect to have clearance issues but the Quad shock is actually hitting the Wheel not the tire. I don't want to go without them long term but is it ok for me to drive about a half hour on the highway back to school and replace them later this week? Also what is the skinniest one I can get my hands on in either the correct or backwards configuration.

Hell no, unless you have a death wish. It all depends on how "hard" the contact is, but even if it's just a little that could kill you.

your axles or your back spacing on the wheels are wrong. I know my wheels are 5.6 back space. Don't remember what the axles are

My Wheels are Wheel Offset: 26mm offset and Wheel Backspacing: 6.12 The rear right seems to be rubbing more, I just rolled my car about 5 feet forward and that was the only one making noise.

Any tips on a skinny quad shock?

Have you tried flipping them around! That might work

I WAS being nice, last I checked, keeping people from killing themselves is generally considered to be doing them a favor. You've got too much backspacing, it needs at least a 1/4" bolt-on adapter-type spacer (maybe more) to make those fit right, from my experience with Foxbody wheels and backspacing, you need to end up with more like 5.8" B.S.

Fix the cause, not the problem!

Yes you can drive without the quad shocks. You may notice more wheel hop, but it's perfectly safe.

You could try flipping them around for more clearance.

Yea I'm going to take them off until I can get more information about which new ones might fit cause these are absolutely shot anyway I'm pretty sure they are original.

No problemo, always glad to help. Nothing wrong with spacers, so long as they bolt on instead of sliding over the studs; the bolt on kind are even legal at most road course tracks.

Just at least upgrade the studs as well. Very cheap insurance if you are going to run the bolt on spacers.

Ok, I'll see if I can get away without them for now, according to the SN95 swap pages they say a 17x9 R58 Cobra R rim will fit with the ranger axles and those have 5.9" backspacing if I can find a 1/4" with flipped quad shocks I'll do that.

Autozone sells quad shocks. You need to order them online, but they are $21 each and made by Gabriel and is a decent shock.

They may be narrow enough for you or you can flip them

Thank you! I have seen those mentioned before as a good replacement and will definitely check them out. Unfortunately my car is going to have to sit for a few weeks its crunch time at the end of the semester and I have to try to keep my priorities straight lol

I had the same problem, the stock quads( don't know if you still have them) to me are the best. they have a long skinny shaft and the body is small and flat on the sides, I don't know about the gabriels but the flat sides of the body I think are key if the body is round that could be a problem. the body of the shock just cleared my wheels but the stock quads seen better days. I bought the kyb ones but they hit even when flipped, the guys on here had me cut the dust shield off but still no good for my application. I found out that the later models stangs 94 up to around 2004 I think used the same exact quads they matched up perfect, looked the no different than my 1991's. I put them in and no problems.

I called steve at Tousley ford and got some quads from a 95 or 96 mustang. He gives Mustang guys a 10% discount over cost not list cost. I get just about all my frod stuff from him. The number is 1-800-328-9552 just tell him you are from stangnet. I don't know if this will what you need but I figured I would post it up anyways.

No thats great information, I'll flip the stock ones and see if that fits. I did notice that they seem to be the smallest but was unsure if I could get my hands on any that would be in better shape.

Thats what I was getting at, I don't think I need to find all that much space, a flip should do the trick...hopefully because I'm not trying to spend $$$ on LCA's but it is an option.
