question about lost title & bill of reciept..

Anyone know how I can check to see if another mustang i'm buying is ligit? here's the story. i'm looking to buy another mustang. there's this guy down my road... well i bought a mustang from his son earilier this month and everything went well with the title/registration. so his dad tells me the story behind the mustang i'm looking to buy from him/dad. the dad bought it from a soldier who was heading to iraq. he says he might be able to find the bill of reciept somewhere, but it might be lost too. well this
soldier never got the title transferred or found it, something along those lines.
well the guy went to iraq and never came back... the dad heard this guy died over in the war. the tabs expired back in 2003 so it's been over 3yrs and no contact from this soldier or title paperwork. well i'm trying to get a title for this mustang. i know i can file for a lost title, have a bill of reciept, etc. but i'm not sure if the TOPIC OF: him not finding the original bill of reciept and not ever having recieved the title will cause a problem with the licensing department???? if he writes a bill of reciept to me and release of interest... am i able to get a title/file for lost title even though he never actually recieved the title???

i guess i should also mention there is NO MOTOR OR TRANNY to run serial numbers.

The VIN number is near the base of the driver's side windshield. An engine and/or trans number won't matter. Before you give any money, be certain the seller gives you a bill-of-sale and verify his identity, write the 17 digit VIN number on the receipt. That is just to protect you from being charged with receiving stolen property. Ideally, before you give any money, contact the DOL with the VIN and see what info they have on the car -like it's last registered owner. If it's stolen, that should also come-up. They should be able to advise you thereafter. Good luck. Let us know how this comes-out. How many Mustangs do you have now, Jerimiah?

this guy lives down my street. i think i had told you about him once when you came over that day. he's a mechanic and usually has like 5-7 mustangs on his property just sitting, even a nice svo (said he'd settle for $4500.. kinda high imo) and a few tbirds, lincolns.... about the mustang i'm look at though. he stated he bought it to get it back up and running on the road. the tranny is gone and so is the motor. however, i have a spare roller and i can always pickup a t5. short of getting an actual carfax, i entered the vin and it came up as a 84 gt... not the 85 he said it was. thus 84 with 85 nose. plus the door was stamped E4. i'm going to call the dept of licensing for advise tomorrow after work with the vin # and license plate #. i was going to use the car for it's carb parts cause my 85 aod is cfi. if worst comes to worst and i cannot get a title. i could always strip what i need and part out the rest... or give the corpse away for next to nothing or free. but then i'm not the type of guy to call it quites on a horse... if ya know what i mean. i have the dd 89lx still, which lately has been giving me elec prob. the 85 is properly stored on stands for winter in the garage. i'm prob going to rent a local storage garage for this other 84 and all my parts. the garage is a mess! it'll be 3 i have then

He probably get a mechanics lein on these cars from people who asked him to fix something then didn't want to pay the price quoted and didn't know what to do with the unfixed car.

Here's how you have to get the title, I'm going through the same thing right now with my 66 stang. I bought it from this girl who got it from her old friend who is now in prison and the dad of the kid is dead in Nevada who's name was on the title. So I bought this car with just a bill of sale.

You have to get a notarized Bill of Sale, then take it through State Patrol, then after that you get a 3 year registration only, so you get your new plates and a registration, and if no one claims it in three years you get the title. It sucks waiting that long but if you get your title its worth it.

yea i just found that out this evening when i stopped by the dept of lic. i had them run the vin and plates and the car came up clean/not reported stolen. atleast i dont have to worry about that. thanks to all who responded
