What is the widest tire you can put on a 17x9 rim on 87-93 notch before trouble begins? I'm wanting something fat like a 315 on the or around that but I am concerned that it might rub or something.

usually you stop at a 275 if you want to avoid problems.

anything larger you get into specific offsets, rolling fenders, quad shock removal, articulation issues, ect.

I thought you would have to flip the quad and massage the inner w/ a 275/40/17 mounted on a 17x10. No?

some people don't have to do any mods, some only have to flip the quads or remove them all together with 17x9's & 275's. There are a few who have had to roll the lip, the offset is going to effect the fit and is the biggest factor also some 275's run wider than others. take a look on tire rack at some 275's and the specs, you will find some that are more narrow than others. The width doesn't effect the dia of the same aspect ratio tire. example a 255/40-17 is 25" in dia. wether it's 10.0" wide or 10.3 " wide on a 9" rim, 8" rim or even a 10 but it's width changes slightly from the rim width.

A 315 ( and pretty much the widest to stuff under the stock wheel housing ) tire is going to take hammering the inner fender, rolling the lip and removing the quads. It also might have some side wall buldge on a 9" wheel, would look better on a 10" wheel. A 275 tire looks awsome a 9" wheel.

I have an 8.5" wheel right now with wider than most 255's and had to flip the quads due to offset of the wheel, to many this shouldn't even have been an issue but it was . If I ran a little more narrow tire I would have been all set but I didn't even think a 255 would be any trouble.

I just installed SVO brakes and axles in my turbo coupe housing and installed it in my notch. with the 94-97 cobra wheels and 275/40/17 tires the tire edge is right inline with the edge of the wheel well. I have a solid 2 inches on the inside of the tire to the wheel well.

Here is a picture...

Iam running a 295/35/18 BFG DR on an 18x9 wheel and it has a little too much side bulge for my liking. In hind sight, a 275 or a narrow 285 would have been perfect! A lot of guys want to run the biggest tire possible, or widest tire possible, but once they are on, it doesn't look as good as a tire size that is appropriate. I saw an 04' cobra with a 315 on a 18x9 and it looked ridiculous...it was so bad it took away the fact that it was a beautiful, black cobra

275's with a quad shock flip is as big as you're gonna fit without getting out the BFH.

I had to flip the quad shocks on mine and 275's fit fine, just some slight rubbing on fender lip probably due to the offset (unknown) of my rims.

hey guys sorry for waking up a old thread but figured id ask in this one rather than start another

ive got a set of 265-50-15 on the rear sitting on a 15x9 weld wheel....i need to put the quads back on as they were taken off when i bought the car...

do you think they will fit? im in need of tires shortly and probably will be getting 255's...but for the meantime i need to minimize this wheelhop!

ive attached a pic so you could get an idea of the offset...

I have some 315 goodyears on a set of Pony R Rims. I dont know the offset, but am just a hair shy of sticking beyond the outer fender lip. It did take the BFH to "work" portions of the inner wheel well and I utilized my weight jaker control arms to lift the rear end up slightly. Once you get over the "Wow those tires are huge" part, you realize that the 275s are probably a nicer option and a heck of alot cheaper to replace.

why do you need to put the quads back on? get a good set of control arms, and ditch the factory bandaid (quad shocks).
