ReefBlueHatch's Progress Thread

Well this weekend looked like the last of warm weather for awhile. Saturday I did all the POR-15 stuff and finished masking. Today I did a lot of scuffing and wax/degreasing. Then did a coat of sealer followed by base and clear coat. The pictures don't do any justice, it turned out great. I did it out in the driveway like a redneck! Surprising I didn't pick up any dirt.

Hey Reef. Great project. I want to thank you for posting your thread as I have a similar rust problem in my engine bay. I've had my 89GT since '98 and its been a LONG term project. Got married, bought 3 different homes and had a kid...but I've still managed to hold on to her. My son is 6 now and I'm finally getting back into it. Just had a question for you. You reference POR-15. Like I said, I've been out of the game for a while so I'm not really familiar (or I forgot?) that name. I googled it and it brought me to summit racings page and there are a bunch of different products. Can you let me know what specific product you used and the steps you went through to prep and apply?? Thanks in advance!

I used POR15's starter kit http://www.por15.com/SUPER-STARTER-KIT/productinfo/SSKB/ I used a wire brush on a drill to remove the rusty scale then followed POR15's very detailed instructions. What I also discovered is rust inside the frame rails below the shock towers. I used a magnet to remove the rust pieces and blew the rails out with compressed air. I'm thinking of using Eastwood's rust converter in a can, it's made for inside frame rails and has a hose to get inside.

Thanks, Reef!! Really appreciate the information!

Any updates on this beast??
Well I just got back from Florida, working, and been doing some four wheeling so I haven't had much time. Tomorrow night my wife will be gone, so I'll be getting a lot done.

I did get the T5 and driveshaft in, upper intake on, radiator and hoses are in, tightened down motor mounts, and plugged in a lot of connections. Also had a buddy come by and install an aluminum quadrant. I also refinished and painted a straight OEM rear bumper to replace my wavy one. I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow night.

Yeah it is, but Saturday she purred like a kitten.

Primed the oil pump and then put in the dizzy. It fired right up, gotta love EFI. Burped the coolant system and everything else looked good. The cam has a nice idle with a little lope. I drove it around the block a few times, received some thumbs up, but a lot of strange looks due to no front clip.

Now I'm going to clean up the outside of the aprons, install the clip, and give her a good bath.

My camera cord was MIA, but it's finally back together and I've about 150 miles on it. There's still a few parts I'd like to replace under the hood, but it will pass for now. I was lucky to get some of the last available OEM hooks for the cargo net. I also installed my $40 rear bumper.
