I emailed the seller and he stated that his father bought a Saleen Explorer, and he wanted one as well, he liked it so much. So he went to Saleen, but they had just ceased production of the XP8's, in 2001. So instead he purchased a brand new Explorer for himself. After 4K miles, through a friend of the family, his Explorer was brought to the Saleen factory for a full conversion, as evidenced from the pictures in the auction. He did say that it was not serialized, because Steve would not authorize it, on a 4K mile 'used' car.

What are your thoughts on this? I am in the market for a Saleen Explorer, looks like this one could be had, slightly on the cheap. Is this one a real Saleen? Saleen extension series Explorer? WTF?

Real ones come in fluries and then they are gone. Remember their is only 120 total combined for all years.

Check out our website at www.explorerx.com
In the gallery section, we have what's got to be the largest collection of xp8 pics that exist, literally hundreds of them.

IMO, that one is as good as real, other than the missing number.
What's funny is that there is more real ones, than replicas.
Problem is that when someone asks if it's real, you can't really say yes. But i've seen first hand that saleen with convert vehicles, without numbers, so in that aspect, i do believe the guy.

The body kit is irreplaceable, worth about $3000 or so in mint condition, and the friggin wing is worth a ton also, so don't get any ideas about building a fake one.

The guy selling that one is a member of our site.

Definetely worth more than a nice standard explorer, which is only worth about 5-8 grand now.

There is always guys coming to explorerx to sell their xp8's, some in mint condition, some in pretty sorry condition.

.....yeah, what Joe said. Back in the day, Saleen would install any Saleen part you wanted on your mustang and/or explorer as long as you paid the price. They were not serialized Saleen's but as close to it as you can get without being authentic. In fact, I can recall one particular 96 GT that had every available Saleen aftermarket part installed. All that stopped around 98/99 before the move to their new facility from Whatney......from what I hear now, they are installing aftermarket parts on non-serialized cars once again. If it's profitable, why the heck not???

....while I don't agree with this statement, that explorer is very clean in person and worth more then your average 00 xlt explorer.....sorry Bart!! :D

I guess I didn't do a good job with my research. I just ASSumed that all of the XP8's were AWD. I didn't even realize you could get a 4x2 Explorer from Ford! Needless to say, living in New England, I am going to require an AWD version. My plan is to contact Mark at Performance Autosport, and put in a request for one. Just in case anybody else sees this, I am looking for a clean, low mileage XP8, must be AWD, dark color (read: black!) preferred.

Yep they sure are and with regards to power modifications if Saleen does the install you keep your warranty.

That'd be pretty appealing to Mustang GT owners I would think.

My point was from a collector's view.

......yeah, I know but I had to give you a hard time.:D
By the way Bart, you missed out on buying the 95 coupe, but you will see it shortly!! Where you ask?? Just keep your eyes open and it will pop out at you

.....can I ask why it must be low mileage?? If you plan to drive it, the mileage really means nothing. Just my .02 The mileage has never stopped me from buy a Saleen. I would rather have my just recently departed ultra clean 95 S351 w/ 66,000 miles on it then a trashed, abused one with 10,000 miles on it. With that being said, Joe's statement is correct about www.explorerx.com. Within the XP8 section, you will find some for sale....

Please note on the autotrader xp8, it is missing the wing, we found that it was stolen by some kid, to give to a girl (not a joke, we went through this on explorerx.com a long while back).

It's got a windjammer on it, and the wing is literally impossible to get. But i've got the name of a guy who will make you something similar, and it's just as nice.
I've seen real xp8 wings sell for $1200.

2000XP8 - What do you know about this Explorer? I spoke with the owner last night, he said he believes that he is the 2nd owner. Also, it doesn't sound like he took a lot of pride/car in this vehicle. He said that his mother backed into it, and the bumper (not the Saleen valance) is slightly bent down, and he never got around to fixing it. He also said there is a large scratch/scrape on the front bumper, where he hit a flower pot, and it is also missing one center cap. Another mystery, is according to 'The Book' this XP8 came with chrome wheels, but clearly it has the natural/grey Speedlines on it now. Now the missing wing issue as well. The picture I am getting is that this car, even with the outrageously low miles, has been neglected, to put it kindly.

Don't get me wrong, it is still a good XP8, worth 'restoring' and giving it the care it deserves! What do you guys think that this is worth, meaning what should I offer the owner?? Thanks.

Didn't know it was that messed up. At least it's cosmetic, not mechanical. With that type of damage, i'd want him to take around $3000 off the price, so you can have it fixed.
It used to be forsale here in North New Jersey.

I could of sworn it still had the alcon brakes on it last time it came up for sale. Which have been removed from all xp8's due to faulty bracketry.

I believe the first owner was the son of the owner of the original dealer here in NJ.
