I fail to understand why Explorer 5-lug wheels, 5 X 4-1/2, and other related parts, are not compatible with Fox Mustang. Explain, please? imp
 
I was told SN95 brakes or any 5 lug needs 87-93 struts, is that right? What heads/cam/intake do you recommend and how much horse power will it net?

Or shims on your current struts.

I would not let a pair of struts hold me back from the modernized braking performance and ability to run "better" wheels

Different design of components. The rear has a center offset pumpkin, and they are using internal drum brakes as the parking brake. Leaf spring rear.

The only part you can take is the center diff, and ring gears. Some explorer models do come with a 31-spline limited slip.

Other than that, everything else is not compatible.

Who! If I have a 5 x 4-1/2 bolt pattern on a Mustang, and place an Explorer wheel rim having that same pattern on the Mustang somewhere, what difference does it make that one or the other had/has leaf springs, or a non-center mounted pumpkin? So long as several things are true: Ex. center hole diameter compatible, adequate caliper clearance, appropriate wheel back-set. Am I missing some obvious fault here? imp

What are we discussing here? Just wheels? I thought we were talking about taking the 5-lug brakes off an explorer and putting them on a Mustang 8.8 axle?

I thought the question was wheels-related only. Sorry if I misinterpreted. As far as brakes, etc., go, issues of course get in the way, not the least of which is Explorer's 3rd. generation independent rear suspension.

One other thought came to mind regarding offset from center pumpkins: conventional design for rear wheel drive places the driveshaft in a "hump" which also strengthens the floor pan. Since the engine and driveline is (usually) centered along the axis of the vehicle, and the driveshaft is connected to the pinion gear, the pumpkin housing is shifted a few inches over to the LH side, making the axle lengths different.

Now I gotta look close at my SN95: Eng. is two full inches off center to RH side! imp

Great car! I will be in the market of an 82 in a few months. I Agree with the others make some minor changes. I had an 82 before I was rear ended. All I did was duel the exhaust with shorty headers and a Holley 2-barrel 500cfm carb and boy did it wake up that 302.

I would go with a better option for tires unless it is a concours restoration. those tires are over 300 apiece and are available from only one or two places and it is 40yr old technology.I would do aa sn95 spindle and strut swap and rear end swap. And i would do the sn95 brakes. 96-01 explorer 5.0 and 93 cobra spec transmission. more modern and you would be able to daily drive it.
 
Someday I will find a set of pace car recaros for the Daddywagon, and I will have them upholstered to match the rest of the interior. I love those seats. They’re the best seat originally equipped on a fox mustang, in my opinion.
 
Wow, that's a nice 82 GT! I love the TRX wheels, and still have a set for my 79 Capri. I would be preserving most of that, especially the nose and such, those are rare. My 82 was a straight six GL non ac model that I trailered home for $50 and went from there.

That's a decent example. I've got an 82...ehem...well...the wife has an 82 gt that's put away until I finish my current project.

Our interior is factory black leather and looks nothing like that. The seats had to be swapped out or an upgraded dealer option.
