Wow, after seeing those pic's of your leg, and Dave's arm, I'm like, "Man, I hope those guys heal quick and still have normal use of their limbs."
It's not really the same thing, but back in 1986, when I was a Junior in High School, I broke my jaw in two places. Man, did that mother****er hurt! I was shooting basketballs before gym class started and I made like 5 in a row. As someone got my last swish, he passed it back to me for another shot. I never got to take it because out of nowhere, another kid came flying in to intercept the pass and hit me square on the left side of my face with his forehead. The impact sent my jaw to the right, breaking it on the other side as well. I went down like Mike Tyson punched me out.
When I got up, the assistant gym teacher sent me to the locker room to change and told me to go to the school nurse's office. In the locker room the Football coach (real loser) asked me WTF happened and scoffed when I yelled out that I think I broke my jaw.
At the nurses office, the nurse told me to go home and off I went. I got home and explained to my mother what had happened and we rushed to the local dentist. He said that I only had a bruise and that I'd be o.k. in a few days. Well, after two days of not being able to eat, my mom took me to the Emergency Room of our local hospital, where they X-rayed my face. Sure enough, it was broken. I stayed that night and was wheeled into surgery the following morning. They knocked me out and when I awoke, I had metal pieces in both the upper and lower portions of my gums and they were held tightly together with small rubber bands. The PAIN was ridiculous and no amount of drugs was going to help. I stayed wired up like that for 5 weeks, losing 17 pounds off of my then 160 lb. frame. Luckily, the surgeons did a great job because I haven't had any problems with it since then.
It's kind of comical when I look back at it. After it happened and I returned to school, EVERYBODY was telling me that I should have gotten up and killed the kid who did it because if it had happened to them, that's what they would have done (yeah right). What I learned is that it was an accident and he didn't mean for it to happen. Honestly, when I was hit, the first thing I was concerned with was the pain. I wasn't concerned with beating somebody! Everyone's an "Armchair Quarterback, eh?"
