I've been having a problem happen once in awhile while my steering wheel's turned hard, in situations like backing out of a parking space. The idle will cut down to around 500-600 rpms, and kick itself back up, but others the car will stall. I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem/solution could be? Could a power steering pump affect that?

I had that exact thing a few years ago. It was a stall when maneuvering in the parking lot or backing up....very annoying. I fixed it and it had nothing to do with power steering....after replacing the IAC (idle air controler) all idle issues instantly went away. I think I replaced the TPS (throttle position sensor) as well though.

spock2001us, thanks a lot! My IAC has been on its way out since a week after buying the car. I've held it over just by cleaning it a couple of times. I'll replace the IAC in a couple days. :nice: MotiV8ed_95GT, if this solves my problem I'll shoot you a PM to let you know.

How low is the idle before it does a bog/stall? As I recall, there's no IAC input for the PS because a V8 should have enough power to handle the load. The IAC can kick in if the idle drops too far (saving a stall) but that's not how it should be functioning.

I'd be sure the idle is set correctly.

My idle's around 800 rpms normally, and when it kicks down, it goes down to 5 or 6 hundred rpms. It saves it itself majority of the time, but every once in awhile it'll stall. I just seafoamed the car a day ago, could it still be running slightly rough because of that? I'd definitely like to avoid spending $130 on an IAC I don't even need.

Besides the IAC, I also replaced the PIP on the distributor. If you run the codes, you may get a code for PIP. The PIP is also called the Stator which is the top part of the distributor. Now that I look back at my posts on Stangnet, I see where I replaced the IAC but still had stall issues until I replaced the PIP.

Not sure if this would add to the problem or not, but figured I'd mention it anyway. Yesterday I gave the IAC a good cleaning, along with the already clean MAF. The IAC definitely needed it. Let's just say I never knew the little spring inside the valve was actually orange colored (it was covered in grime). After reinstalling, the idle was smooth for awhile, but later in the night after the car got nice and warmed up, the idle would dip slightly. It also stalled two times in a row, once when backing out of a spot, and once after restarting it, and moving forward about 10 feet. I plan on setting the base idle after getting out of work in 40 minutes, would this help, or could it be something else causing the problem?
