Starting to piece together 5-lug conversion

Having done the rear drum to Cobra rear disk swap myself....trust me it's not just for looks. If you have nice sticky wide tires on the rear, you can dial in more rear bias with the adjustable prop valve and that makes a huge difference :)

Plus you will actually have a handbrake that will hold the car on an incline!!!

Lol, the best handbrake i ever had was in a drum brake-equipped 4-banger Mustang. It would lock up the rear wheels with only 3 clicks. I could be doing 30MPH+ and click it up 3 clicks and both rears would lock and drag the tires. It was amazing.

Neither of my disk-brake equipped Mustangs can do that :nonono:

I was gonna say, I've always heard drums work way better for e-brake.

I ordered some 94-95 spindles off ebay today. Seemed like a good deal. Stangparts.com wanted 250$ for both spindles. PPI didn't have anything.

My 92 GT could not do too good holding on a slight incline, after my Disc conversion it holds great, maybe since your 4 banger was a lighter car was why it did such a good job.

Some stuff is already starting to roll in, this is a good start.

Had to make this image super crappy since stangnet only allows 78K for images.

I also revised my list some after speaking to my buddy who is going to help. I decided just to do all of the suspension stuff now as well. It's amazing how much money this project keeps going up. I still need another 2300$ worth of stuff or so and I already have the axles, spindles, and cobra brakes.

I've got a question about the front brake lines. the 10th. 2003 cobra caliper kit came with some new stainless lines which I assume are for SN95 cars. They bolt to the caliper fine but the Fox and SN95 hard lines are different, correct?

I think I need to purchase these adapters to use these lines that came with the kit to hook to my fox hard lines. Another option would be the Fox to SN95 SS lines that Maximum sells, but they are 80$. Do I have this right?

Yes, you are correct. Take a look at the ends of the SS lines where they would bolt to the body. If you look closely, you'll notice they are different sizes. On the Fox, they are supposed to be the same size. SO one line will bolt up fine, and the other line will need an adapter.

I don't know the adapter part number offhand, but it's a cheap weatherhead fitting sold at NAPA. I'm sure it's printed on the many 5-lug websites somewhere or someone has it.

ANother thing, make sure you get some paint on those drums and the center of the rotors. First time you get them wet they will rust up fast. The Brembo rotors used to come with primer in the center but now they are bare. I did my rotors in silver

I was going to paint the spindles and drums with some POR-15 black paint since I have it laying around. Can you see the center of the rotor that needs to be painted through the wheel? I suppose I could use the same paint but I don't know if it would look wierd since it's black.

I can't really tell the difference in the 2 brake lines on the car side, I guess i'm just blind. I'll go ahead and order one of those adapters.

Yes, especially with the '98 Cobra wheels....those wheels show off the brakes the most.

Don't use POR-15 though. If you want black, buy high-temp engine spraypaint. Don't spray the swept area though because when the rotor turns it will tear a jagged edge. Instead, pull the wheel off after you've tested the brakes to see where the pad area sweeps. Then use some electrical tape to tape off the pad area since it can curve. Then spray the center, let it dry and give it 1-2 more coats. Then pull off the tape and viola.

I did mine silver to match the car.

If you are going through all this trouble to do the conversion, why not do discs in the Rear?
