The (near) Future is Not Electric

My 90 is a convertible with 2.73 gears. It's not beating much of anything in a race, but 0-45 it sounds great and moves quick enough to put you back in your seat. Without the sound, it wouldn't be the same.

But I can see finding an old beater and throwing in an electric crate motor just for shts and giggles.

As far as the future, hydrogen is probably a more realistic long term option.

I don't have an issue with electric or hydrogen cars. My only question about hydrogen is where is it going to come from? You can break down water but that takes lost of electricity. You can get it from coal or oil, but now you're right back in the same boat we are in now. It is a byproduct in a lot chemical reactions, but it's not that much of a byproduct. Besides byproduct hydrogen is typically used on site to either produce energy for the plant or in a different product line to produce other chemicals. So where does all the hydrogen for cars come from?

Electrolysis is the current method I believe. But yes, that will have to become more efficient.

The biggest problem with hydrogen has been storage. Both in capacity and because it's kinda volatile.

We work with hydrogen at work including bulk storage. Lots of training, safety systems, drills, etc.

Every once in a while someone slacks off and makes an oops (no explosion but a leak) and it’s a big deal. These are trained engineers that F up. I’d hate to think what happen with the general public.

The blimps/dirigible airships were cutting edge for their day much like electric cars are now..

It's interesting how this topic came full circle back to technology and consumerism.

It's interesting how this topic came full circle back to technology and consumerism.

It regularly landed and eventually crashed in Lakehurst, but it flew over RI, not necessarily on it's final flight, but at least once.

Well, I have no problem with electric, especially when I look at the numbers the Tesla Plaid turns in.
I further am fully accepting of the fact that electric is the way of the future (unless something else better comes along in the mean time) Although, there may be some debate as to when that day will be, I do expect that day will come before I'm done driving.

NOW.... What I do have a BIG problem with is the Mustang Mach E! A 4 door SUV looking mess is an abomination to the muscle car legacy of the Mustang. Now I know you're probably thinking, "it won't sell and Ford will get the message" and among muscle car enthusiasts, you would be very right. But the problem is, this ting is going to find a market among soccer moms. The family SUV market is a bigger market than that of the muscle car enthusiast, and therefore, when the Mach E out-sells the standard Mustang, the message that will be sent to the bean counters is that this is version of the Mustang people want; thus bringing about the end of the muscle car era. Perhaps when that happens they'll toss us a performance variant of the Taurus.
I know I probably sound paranoid, but we have seen something similar happen to other cars, (and other products for that matter) in the past.

If Hydrogen is pulled from water, have we begun to reduce the amount of water on earth?
I mean it takes a lot of energy to it turn back to water, right?

I'm sure my simplistic view doesn't hit the nail on the head.

I wuz hopin for the day when merica would rule again. We got them all on the autonomous cuz da govment, colleges, big business, etc got together. Love to see a world car made here. We just need the same effort behind the infrastructure to have the charging system work (no coal or nukes to make lectricity). 6, 9 mo ago the fed passed the permission to reproduce quanity classic cars w/o financial penelty to the manafacturer. Also- Wanna early phony? a 90's? Got lectric crate motors now...

Tell me how the charging stations will work without pulling from the current coal/nuke power grids?
