Ok for all you guys that are junkies on the blow to the tune of 9-22psi I have a question. Why is it that on the dyno a turbo makes more tq than a supercharger? I know that the screw or roots style blowers make more tq normally than other superchargers, but from what I have seen they all make about the same hp per psi but tq seem to be the wild card in the mix. Any help would be great, thanks in advance guys.
 
Turbos don't have the parasitic loss that superchargers have, since they don't get their power from the engine. That, coupled with providing boost at lower RPMs, increases low-end torque.
 
I knew about the loss with a drive belt, but had no idea that it was that bad. Thanks guys, once more I get lost and unable to find really good reputable articles on the subject and you get answers out fast!:SNSign:
 
The turbos have that lag time where you have to wait for it to spool up unlike with a blower. I mean, the lag time on a blower is not nearly as bad as a turbo, so I guess you have pros and cons with both.

turbo lag is a myth .. its a left over of poorly deigned factory turbo systems of the 80s ..

current generation turbo systems have no lag what so ever.

a properly designed turbo system if you are above 2500 rpm you can not put your foot to the floor and lift off without seeing boost.

Properly designed and sized turbo systems see full boost by 2300-2500 rpm at full throttle..


as for the torque .. thats a byproduct of the low rpm boost if you check usualy pound for pound a kene bell type system is = to most street turbo kits in the torque department.

however they get hammered in horsepower due to the cooler intake charge temps of a turbo system and the lack of parasitic drag.

the reason centrificals have such low torque production is they make boost as a byproduct of rpm not independantly of it...

Ok with that covered very well, I guess my next question would be does anyone know if any the the three mentioned forced induction systems offer any better longevity over the other? Both the power adder itself and the motor it's applied to. And just for good measure both intercooled and non-intercooled?? So many question thanks for the patients.
 
I wouldn't say that turbo lag is a myth, it's real. Just test drive any Ford F-350 Powerstroke off the lot. You step on it and 1...2...3...Power! It can be easily changed by upgrading the turbo internals and a tune. Ford purposely under powers their turbos for reliability. There are low performance turbos out there which produce lag.

On the plus side if you purchase an aftermarket turbo system from Garrett, Banks etc.; they are high performance turbos and you will have no lag.

Remember torque is torque. What I mean is that any power adder when pushed too far will vent your block. Whatever power adder you do get, get a quality, safe tune on a dyno. Mail order & canned tunes are OK but you can't beat a custom tune on a dyno. Any power adder will reduce your engine life but you can greatly reduce the risks (and increase engine life) by keeping it within safe power levels.

Intercooler, though more expensive, it always a good investment to provide a cooler charge temp, which reduces the risk of detonation.
 
I don't claim to know a lot about turbos, but all of our Ford F-350's have serious lag, even the one we picked up 2 days ago. Now, that's not to say that an aftermarket kit set up properly won't run without lag. My Procharger centrifugal has damn good torque compared to others. 434rwtq (mustang dyno) 11lbs.

how much life? on say a 351 at 20psi

I am no expert in turbos but the turbo on the power diesel is huge, i don't think you would ever used that kind of sized turbo on a mustang, a smaller turbo will spool quicker, but overall provide less totall CFM of air. hence why twin turbos are used.
GIven the choice i would go turbo, but for the price, i would go with a blower.
