Lets say that a scenario exists where I could trade my hybrid straight across for a equal caliber 65 fastback. The car has been restored and appears solid, 289/C-4 styled steel 14" wheels red on red. He wants 20k outright. This opportunity just came up today.

Part of me wonders if my car would ever fetch 20k. (doubtful) Right now, there is only one of mine, and although they're getting way more scarce, 65/66 fastbacks can be found all day, every day depending on how hard you look.

I love the car I built, and now that the column is fixed there is nothing standing in the way of me being 90% happy w/ my car. The other 10% being the lousy blocking and thin paint the painter "did" for me.

The paint is equally mediocre on the F/B, and as far as a fun to drive car, I got him covered in spades. But,..... am I missing out on a great opportunity?

I agree. I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Your car is very much a "love it" or "hate it" kind of custom that, in my opinion, would be very difficult to sell for any kind of money. Like SC said, a 65 fastback will always be in demand.

Do it and run away as fast as you can, laughing at him. Your fox is unique and really nice, but nothing beats old school muscle, imo. You're pretty much able to trade your 60s mustang clone for the real thing.

I'd check that FB real close. Don't know but it sounds too good to be true. If I owned a true fastback, I wouldn't trade it for a fox (don't get me wrong, I love the foxbody).

I would check the FB over and if it looks good I would swap in a heartbeat. Given I don't know much about your car. If you do swap, I would recommend swapping the c4 for an overdrive if you plan on driving it alot. I have a 66 with a c4 and love it around town, but when I hit the interstate the engine turning 3000 rpms gets a little old. Just my 2 cents.

As much as i love your car, and it must be hard to consider trading something with that much work into it, I think in the long run the FB will be better to have. That being said, you know of course to crawl all over the car looking for the usual rusty spots to make sure you aren't picking up a rust bucket.

Do it. Really like your car but when you finally get tired of it, or at least want to move onto something else, that's gonna be a really hard sell. One offs are always hard to move, and if you've found a way to "upgrade", go for it. It's not like you don't have the skills to create something similar in the future

If only you knew me like my wife does

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input.

I've been thinking about this for about 15 hours straight. The conversation w/ my wife has convinced me that it is not about money, it's about why I built the car in the first place. (to do something different) The car wasn't built to resell, or even w/ that in mind, so therefore there was never gonna be a break even point if I ever resold it.

W/ regard to the 65, I wouldn't leave it alone. It'd be restomodded by this time next year, (probably make it worth less than the actual 20k dude wants for it)
As for leaving the F/B alone, and just driving it, If I wanted a car to get it and putt around in, I would've kept the street rod project that donated the engine and trans to the current car. Right now, at the Fox's current level of modification, it drives and performs every bit (w/ the exception of the brakes) as good as any 02'GT that the engine was yanked out of, w/o the mundane sameness of owning one. For me, that's a big plus.
I drive it all the time.

I know My car doesn't hold a candle to the mega-dollar pro-builds that we all read about i.e. Anvil, Blackened. But I wonder what happens to them once the novelty wears off (probably sit on some showroom floor/or in a collection and never get driven) That is what I'm thinking about mine, what's gonna happen once the novelty wears off? Any body that has paid attention to my ramblings knows that I have had several cars over the years, and most of them as different as the one I currently own. All of those cars didn't last a year w/ me after they were built, I never liked them enough to keep them.

This one is different though. (maybe I'm just getting too old)

That is where I am at the moment. Neither path is set yet. I'm still thinkin'

Looks like Im the only guy who is going to say, keep the one you built! I would love to have a fast back. My all time favorite car is a 69 fast back but, you have already been there & done that. My car would be worthless to anyone but me so, I can relate to, "not building a car with resale in mind". While my car will never look as good as yours, I wouldnt trade yours. You built the car for you. If you get bored with it, you can continue modding it. The fast back would have to be like factory to be worth a lot & then there is nothing left to do to it. Whats the fun in that? Best of luck either way.

Nope, you're not the only one. I passed on the deal. The car was nice, But the paint was way inferior to mine, and mine isn't great. I saw it as another money gobbling project I didn't want to take on. I have owned 3 first gen mustangs, and the 2bbl 289, stock C4, peg leg 8" drivetrain, "3.0 something" rear gear didn't do a thing for me. in fact, It would've bored me to tears in about a week. (if that long) Just another 4.6 + 8 C.I. needing improvement or replacement, like the one I got.
I saw 10k in engine/trans/rear end swap needing to be done to make me happy w/ it, (ALUMINATOR) and the small engine bay would've required that front suspension swap (another big lump of green) to get rid of those big-assed shock towers to let me do it.

I know that there'll probably be a communal moan when everybody reads of my decision, but I am definitely NOT ready to get rid of the current car. (Hell, the new wheels haven't even got here yet)
Something I'd also have to deal w/ on the F/B as well, those 14 x 6's would have to go.

maybe if this had come around a year from now I might have looked at it different, but not this time. Still in love w/ the current car.

I think you made the right decision, and that's coming from A) a muscle car guy and B) someone who buys/sells/trades like it's going out of style. After all that work, you're better off keeping it around for a while. The damn paint job isn't even cured yet.

You have a magazine car that you built yourself. Even if it isnt worth $20K, it HAS to be worth something to you. Glad you kept it. Keep modding it and having fun with it. I dont think it will ever stop getting people's attention, even if they are just thinking WTF is that?
