A supercharger compresses air so the intake of air is greater and denser. in doing so, compression causes heat so the intake air is warmer giving a higher risk of detonation ie pinking or knocking. Knocking causes your knock sensors to alert the computer to retard the timing to stop it so the tune has to be more conservative.
The chargecooler is basically a water to air radiator that fits between the supercharger and the intake so when the supercharger heats the incoming air through compression, the chargecooler cools it right down again thus less risk of detonation means a more aggressive tune allowing more power to be produced without risk of damage to the engine.
This is a chargecooler on the left front of this pic. Air comes in through the air filter off to the right, through the black intake duct into the supercharger on the front right of the engine which pumps air out, through the chargecooler and into the intake plenum.
