winter is coming

my car is on bald nittos and once the first snowflake hits the ground my car is getting garaged. I'm not sure if i'll be able to borrow my girlfriends sunfire all winter again so i was looking into getting a winter beater.

I saw the beater thread but...geez...alot of you guys drive nice cars in the snow. Much more than i can afford. what are some idea's for a cheap winter car for a college student?

It needs to be able to hold its own in the snow for sure and be reliable.
I really dont care if the thing is a rusty pos, as long as i can run it to death.

I was looking into 90's f150s (I6 or V8?) and broncos. i'm sure alot of you guys have owned these so what are your guys opinions on them as far as reliability, expense of parts, etc?

thanks a bunch :)

I'd get a bronco, they are cheap and fun in the summer too. I had a 78 and loved it. Gas sucked though. This year for winter I'm running a 87 2500 Suburban and a 89 BMW 525i. The stang gets tucked away for winter in the garage .

I have a 97 F150 4x4. I drive it year round, and take the Mustangs out occasionaly. I never take my stang to run errands, or park it anywhere. The F150 is ready for the winter..

I installed:

New exahust manifolds...DAMN THE 5.4L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New sway bar links

New axle shaft RH side and rebuild differential (REAR)

Oil change

New rear brakes

New front brakes.

102,000 miles and stiff going strong.

dunno

If you NEED a truck for some reason, then look at a I6 Cherokee. But, I hope you like buying gas... I had a 2001 Wrangler that was always thirsty. I think I got around 13 mpg although I had 30" tires  My father in law has a 1996 Cherokee and he's always putting gas in that thing too. I think he said he gets around 15mpg. Also, you get to buy new rotors every 15,000 miles or so on a Cherokee :notnice: Check out www.carsurvey.org for user reviews

I drive a 98 Mazda 626 5speed (NEVER buy a Mazda automatic trans, they are HORRIBLE) I bought it with 16,000 miles on it, it now has 120,000. Still rockin the original clutch and original brakes! The only things I have replaced on it in 104,000 miles are 1) the battery 2) tires 3) cd player. I get around 25mpg and no problems in the snow. My sister has a 98 ZX2 5 speed that gets around 28 mpg and is a champ in the snow too.

Not to threadjack, but is that a Rustoleum paintjob? Looks better than before. :nice:

As far as winter beaters ... pretty much anything FWD with skinny tires is a safe bet, although I'm partial to RWD with knobby tires and a few sandbags thrown in the back. You can always score a Geo Metro, Ford Escort, or Ford Tempo for next to nothing, drive any of those turds forever, and still be rockin' the cheap gas mileage...

Nope, I used the duplicolor stuff from advance. I didn't put any clear on it. I have about 60ish in the paint right now. I wanted to do the rustoleum but the 8 days of work scared me off. I need to do some touch up on the door and then shoot some clear. I may do that soon.

Heres my daily/winter beast.:D
