My old car was a Mazda.. And it sucked in the snow with the low profile tires. last year I traded it in for this car and its AWD.. I never got stuck last year and I am sure I wont this year.

niiiice....but i dont think 93GT's gonna buy one

but on topic....you know saturns are dirt dirt cheap and any of those little things can handle snow just fine....they just have no cool-factor whatsoever.....but for college...especially in Columbus, you cant beat a plastic car!

+1 for the Saturn SL2 w/ DOHC! My buddy has been beating his around town for 5 years trouble free waiting for it to explode so he can replace it. A fairly quick car too for what they are but agreed on the lack of cool factor.

I would get a honda civic or accord. These cars a great in the snow. My fiance had a civic and we never got stuck in the snow with it. And its a honda so it will run forever.

Otherwise I would opt for a Subaru or another car thats AWD.

I was looking into 90's f150s (I6 or V8?) and broncos. i'm sure alot of you guys have owned these so what are your guys opinions on them as far as reliability, expense of parts, etc?

If you are going for a F150 go with the I-6, its a great motor. I had an 87 4x4 that was awesome for the price. Now IMO a 4cyl ranger is cheap, gets good mileage, and are tough lil trucks.

I've always had Honda Civics as beaters. I've owned probally 10-15 Hondas and I live in the Snowbelt of Pennsylvania. Never had any probs. I drive an 03 Honda AWD Element Ex for my daily now, and that thing goes ANYWHERE!

Well i dont have much saved up right now. Maybe 500 to be honest. But it isnt snowing yet and i wont NEED a dd until probably january. By then i'll have more $ in the bank. nothing more than 1500 i'd say, which isnt alot but all i can swing.

I too have heard good things about the f150s I6. Plus the idea of a truck is good to me i think same with a bronco/explorer. There's been so many times i wouldve liked to just throw something in the back but have no room (tools, dirty crap, furniture, etc.). The only downside i see is the gas, but i'm DDing a modded 5.0 right now and it isnt putting too much strain on me.

another HUGE HUGE HUGE consideration is online support. I see quite a few truck and bronco forums where i could get help with problems. You guys have no idea how many times this forum has helped me fix something. However, I try and find something online for my gf's sunfire or her moms concorde and its like we're the only people driving one!

if you want cheap, get a tempo. i had mine for 2 winters and i get alot of snow and its really cold in the winter (-40F no windchill.........seriously) and i never had a problem with it. the thing would just plow through snow like no tommorow!

my old 90 f150 with I6 was an awesome truck for bashing around in winter, and it was 2wd to boot (although we havent really had a good winter here in years, it still handled snow pretty well). the motors will normally last 200k miles before a rebuild, you normally have to rebuild the truck around them first (rust in the rear wheels is really what made me trade in mine). mine got around 17-18mpg highway with an automatic and a 3.08 gear.

cherokee's/grand cherokees are also awesome vehicles, the 4.0 is another proven I6 that works very well in the platform imo. know a lot of people with em and for the most part they always loved em and they lasted quite the long time.

My uncle had a '93 with the I6 and it had 237k on it and ran fine when he traded it in a few years ago. It ran great but the rest of the truck was falling apart.
The idiot traded it in on a Silverado with a 4.3.

I'm currently looking for a 4.0 cherokee right now as a beater. I've test driven 10 of them and haven't liked a single one.

Maybe i'm spoiled by driving a new car as a DD, but i hate the idea of driving some POS beater....but then again i need it for snow.

Anyway i'm going to make an offer on a clean '95 cherokee tomorrow..wish me luck.

Come spring time i'm selling my GT and the winter beater and going to buy a nice all season ride.....a G35X (i've only been saying that for a year now...but this time i'm gonna do it! )

With a budget of maybe 1500 your really limited on finding a decent car. Dealers are heavily over inflated in used car pricing and when owners see what dealers are asking, they get inflate-itis and want darn near as much.

Go get a Geo tracker. 4x4 30 mpg, hold up like little tanks, and you could sell it in the summer as a convertible advertisement for as much as you paid for it in the winter. I've driven a two wheel drive ford F150 in the winter... try stopping on a hill and get going again with an open rear end. Posi.... she slid over to the side of the road on me but kept crawling in either case was a pain in the ass.

You could always buy a beater 5L mustang and put skinny 4cyl snow tires on it.

Im driving an 83 ford ranger i picked up for 400. Fun in the woods and will hold up fine in the snow.. I reccomend one. You can find parts almost anywhere for it..
