I have that goop already. (Actually, I have the Hondabond version) I bought it when it was supposed to be my solution to sealing the copper head gasket that leaked. (That continued to leak)

The problem I have with that stuff is that it dries almost instantly. Because of that, It really doesn't work that good for sealing the long runs that I'd have to make work if I were to use it solely as a gasket.
I think I'm gonna try the "Right stuff" again. It woulda worked the last time except I didn't apply it to the areas that the plate smashes against and I ended up w/ a seeping leak. This time,........I'll be more diligent w/ my blob-u-lation technique.

I used anaerobic sealant on my t5 case this last go around. It dries in the absence of air and was recommended because it stays flexible. Not sure how much flexing that part of the motor might be doing. (Hopefully none at all, but I am having a hard time picturing the plate).

Ah, well yamabond is NOT to be used with copper.. instructions say so, so there's that..
 
Ok,....I'm off today...(It's weird.....been like 9 months since I've had Saturday off).

Any way,....I'm sitting here waiting on the............. (what do we call it..........:scratch:.......uhh......."Gumption?") to get dressed, and go get the stuff to close the Monsters engine back up and pray that there will be no stinkin oil leak afterwards.

I'm trying to decide on whether or not I buy that felpro gasket kit that AZ sells that has square sheets of gasket material, and make a .060 cork gasket that will "glue" to the plate, and then apply a bead of the right stuff to the block, or just eliminate the cork gasket altogether and just stick metal to metal. From what I understand,...that is all Chevrolet uses for an oil pan gasket on LS engines.....Maybe our resident LS expert can confirm?....

I know the 5.3's we've worked on have all had pan gaskets, A thin metal/silicon hybrid gasket IIRC, but I'm not sure If all LS's are like that.

I do know that Toyota does not put oil pan gaskets on anything, They use what they call seal packing FIPG (00295-00103) to seal all their oil pans, and most of their front covers.

It's a metal/silicone gasket on all the LS stuff I've ever built.

Making a gasket seems very "Mike", you seem to like crafting one-off versions of stuff everyone else buys premade.
little cork, little glue, bada bing bada boom got yourself a gasket.

Ok,....I'mmm Baaack.

I thought I was gonna spend the day in the garage today.......I was wrong. I only made it to about 2PM.

The plan started off normally enough, in the garage at about 8:30, laying under the car attempting to scrape the residual right stuff off of the sealing surfaces where the cover plate used to be.
I just couldn't get my arms/hands into all of the spaces necessary to scrape the old sht off the block.
That led to the realization that I was never gonna be able to successfully re-install the plate w/o some significant cussing, and more than likely have a leak just as soon as I restarted the damn thing because of some piece of old silicone that got in the way.

So,....I removed the intake. Like I said, it needed to be ruled out as a possible source of vacuum leaks. I thought I had made the six port gaskets out of that fel-pro bulk stuff when i installed it, so I was curious to see if there was evidence of a leak.

What ended up being the deal, however was that there were no gaskets. I made a set the first time and I think they lasted through the first removal of the intake, but they didn't make it after the intake got pulled the second time.

So I used Hondabond as a gasket. Whether or not they sealed, I couldn't tell ya, removing the intake this time just shows that it was there. Now it's not.

One thing I did notice was this:

Either gas is getting past the o rings, or the injector bosses. One way or the other, I gotta leak in two places.

There's also this wet spot on top of the intake,.....but I passed that off as having sat something oily there, but now I'm wondering about that too. Thing is,...how would gas get back there? It is coincidently where a weld is, so I'm thinkin' that it's a little suspect as well?
We're in a stage 4 drought. Water usage is restricted, so I cannot was this poor SOB off. If I'm to see if I gotta leak, and will have to do some additional welding, I gotta wash it off. Gasoline and welding don't pair very well. Maybe I'll have to use my buddy JB......

Since the intake is off you'll be able to see what hangs underneath, and why removing said intake is such a pain.

It gets very complicated under that intake manifold. And trying to get that plate off with this thing hanging and bolted to the bottom side of the intake is the reason I removed the damn thing after the fact. As hard as it was to get it off, getting it back on w/o messing it up,...............not gonna happen..

I made a gasket for the plate after all. I used some really thick (like .125) cork out of a felpro bulk gasket makers kit. I also skimmed the bottom of the sealing surface w/ the right stuff. Then I put that thing back on.

In hindsight, this plate is probably overkill. I don't think that I added back any integrity despite the fact that it's 3/8" thick, has 5 honkin' lugs welded on the side, and that bolted the thing on in every possible place, but it's done, so no choice but to use the heavy assed thing.

So,..the Wife is going somewhere again tomorrow morning, and again, I get a few hours to reinstall the intake. and restart the car. While writing this, I've decided that I'll use that JB epoxy putty to seal up any potential leaks.

So you know for sure where the leak is coming from now?
Well,......all I can say is maybe. Uhhh probably........Err yeah.

When I was drilling all those holes for those bolts/studs, I drilled two extra holes in the rear lower corner in the plate. Turned out that I could not drill the engine where the hole was (twice) so I plugged those holes with silicone (At least I thought I did) When I pull the plate,..I can see light through one of the "plugged" holes. Whether or not that was one of the sources of the leak, I can't be positive cause it seems like oil should been seeping from that hole. although it seems simple enough (and it probably was) Oil might have came out of the hole, and found a different place to get out like a roof leak. Those two holes are welded shut now. You can see the one up front that was welded, but the one in back is covered by stuff in the photo.
 
Could you use the epoxy for repairing gas tanks? seems it would hold up better to the fuel.
There are plenty of "knead-able" putties out there, I'm gonna put the thing back together first try and clean it up as best I can so that I can watch where it's leaking and see if fuel is coming out anywhere.

In other news,...I allowed TS to update itself. The update caused the software to lock up, (something about a corrupt .jar file)

I've only seen that one time. you will need to reinstall TS. the catch is that you will have to find your registry information.
 
I have already emailed EFI analytics. Hopefully they'll send me that info.
If you have Windows 7 or later, it automatically makes backups of the registry and system files IF you had the backup feature enabled. Even if you didn't have the feature turned on, the event log would capture the error message and tell you which file caused the error. Replace bad file with a known good copy and you are fixed.

FYI: this is the sort of thing that I have been doing for a living for the last 16 years or so. PM me for help if you are interested.

What.......a pain in the ass that was.

Finally got the Monster off of life support and back together. The oil sending unit for whatever reason decided to fck w/ me and the threaded stud that the connection goes on started to spin, so a nut would not tighten. When something "spins" I just consider that it's just twisting whatever it was connected to, and is no longer useable. So I reinstalled the plug for today so I could start the damn thing.
I decided to gasket the intake manifold, so I went down to AZ and bought some more stuff. This material looks like the stuff that a water neck gasket is made out of, so I hope that it will work with what I'm using it for. I wasn't able to get the damn bolt holes that hold the pump under the intake manifold to line up w/o major screaming, but I finally managed to get one to pass through. When I get the new sending unit, I'll work on getting a second one in there, and that will be all that I'm gonna attempt.

As for today,...the leak is gone.But before i break out the dancin bananas, I need to get the sending unit installed and run the engine up to temp to be truly sure of that. In hindsight, I'm thinkin that the bolt hole that I could see light passing through was my problem. That coulda been fixed w/ blob-u-lation, had I known that, but you couldn't see that from underneath.

So,..it's not as good as it was. Before there were 4 bolts holding that pump in place, and now I'll be lucky if I can get two installed. The cover plate was probably good to go (save for the leaking hole), and now there is a thick assed piece of cork that'll probably saturate and start leaking one of these days,....

It's one of those damned if I do,...damned if I don't kinda feelings for me, so......yea.
