Build Thread '83 T-top Coupe - Welding Holes in My Rear

The engine issues are way out there for me now. It's possible when I need an engine that I could still get that one though.

If not, the only two options I'm thinking of are expensive. A FRPP 351/460 or a newish 2018 version of the coyote.

Admittedly I could get the coyote and transmission for the same price as the 460, not that this will sway my decision..........much...........
 
Why am I not posting much during the week lately, you might wonder......

You see, on tuesday night America's Got Talent is on, Wednesday we get the voting results, and last night I was at my daughter's Welcome Back to School crapola. I had to go to that because she pointed out that I'm her father and it was a family event.

Crap, logic provided by a public school.......

Anyhow, I'm working tomorrow morning. While I'm there I'm going to grind down the rest of the 1x1 tubing so it's nice and clean. I want to finish the (let me see here, I need to change the name of what I've been building because of, what shall I call him?, an elderly gentleman?) The chassis support, is that gooder?

I'm going to bring the tubing to work because I believe too much grinding in the garage is like hammering a spike in my wife's head. Normally you'd think that's a good thing, right? She does have a unique way to express her displeasure.

Anyhow again, Tomorrow afternoon between the key football games (OU at noon and OSU at seven), I'll finish with the making of the driver's side chassis support (cs.....lol). Then I'll cut the tack welds and put it up on a stand and do some pretty welding......unlike that welding I do on my back:nonono:.

So I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Dave should to surrender to the gods of LS and put an LS series engine in. But use this:

I saw that a couple of years ago. It is a front timing cover that mounts a small block Ford distributor in the front. If you did that, 99% of the yeehaws will think it's a SBF.

Then @Davedacarpainter would have the greatest internal combustion technology created by the hands of man since the mighty B CAM!

Not that big of a deal, sure. It is nice to use my air tools to clean it up though! A shop compressor has slightly more air capacity than the old home unit, lol.
 
I priced out a coyote swap. It's not cheap. Sure you can get an f150 motor for around $1500 these days but all the other stuff nicklel and dimes you....or more like $50s and $100s you.

Then you gotta mod the coyote...

A healthy 347 or 351 based motor will be cheaper in the long run and probably have gobs more torque.

I still envy a coyote swap, but I just don't see the ROI
 
I've got an idea. Get a 250 out of a Maverick and put an Aussie crossflow head on it and turbo charge it. No one has ever thought of that before!

Anyhow, all my teams won yesterday for a change. I watched football from about noon till roughly ten last night.

That leaves today. I'm getting ready to go out to the garage finally. I'll have some pictures a little later.
 
So I went to the garage naively thinking I would bust out a couple more rungs and three or four diagonals.:nonono:

God didn't keep me in suspense very long on what would be difficult.

Rung number four was the first thing up for bids. I measured and cut a piece and laid down to see how it would fit.

#4 goes right under the rear seat footwell area. It drops quite a bit here. Enough to interfere with a nice straight rung of a chassis support.

I was left with three choices, one: cut into my new floorpan to make it fit......nope. Two: beat the snot out of the new pan to make it fit the straight rung......again, nope. Three: modify the rung to fit around the floorpan......winner.

It took about 2.5 hours to make this one rung. I had to draw a basic design on the rung of the shape of the floorpan and cut it out with my die grinder. Then I went through the phase of laying on my back fitting, grinding some, fitting, grinding, etc....

Eventually I had the shape I wanted. Then I had to cap off the cut out areas. So I cut out four small caps, welded them, and dressed it. Once I had the shape all cut out I found out I'm an idiot and cut it about 1/8" too short:nonono:. So I added a cap to the sfc end to give it the extra length.

It fits up wonderfully now.

So, on to rung #5.
 
Okie dokie, rung five was a piece of cake, maybe ten minutes involved in it.

Then the first diagonal, piece of cake again.........Then came the rear diagonal brace.........:nonono:

It goes from the jr directly underneath the torque box. The torque box is in the way. Choices again, cut out the torque box? Uhmmmmmmm.........make the rear brace conform to the torque box.....:nice:

I did like before with measuring and cutting out a chunk, then the fitting and grinding thing. I cut out the first patch piece to fill the new void.

welded it up and dressed it, took another piece of scrap and partially welded it in.

Then I cut/ground off the excess and finished welding it up and dressed it.

Tack welded it into the cs.

So, here it is, the driver's side chassis support fabricated.

Now I'll need to cut the spot welds off the sfc and the rocker pinch weld, drop the cs out and put it on a stand and do some pretty perimeter welds around the connecting tubes.
 
BTW, when I drop the cs I will be seam sealing the floor to rocker area and probably the front and rear edges of the floorpan from the underneath side. That is, before I weld the cs back in.

Then I'll coat all of it in POR15, to include the cs. Weld the cs back in and coat the welded areas.
