I have a 66 conv. currently with a modified 1971 - 302 and the stock C4. Both are in need of replacement or rebuild..

I have a line on a used 88 - 5.0 EFI complete motor(All wires, computer, hoses, alternator, PS pump, Air Filter etc.). rebuilt 5000 miles ago.
This engine is not a MAF equipped unit.. should I pass on this one and look for a engine with the MAF? What is involved in changing speed density to MAF?

The car is used as a daily driver and would like to have 250-300HP, with reliability and fuel economy.. This is why I am looking to the EFI 5.0..

Thanks for your opinions and help..

Smudgie...

engines are the same, for the maf setup just buy a maf conversion kit. about 350 bucks, it includes maf, computer some piping and then you need to add a couple of wires to the harness.

The EFI computer is different, as said you need a MAF, & Maf conversion harness. Do a search, instructions on the harness conversion are available. Not hard at all especialy in conjunction with the EFI conversion.
You could go ahead & do the speed density installation & convert to MAF later.
Come to think of it, I have a conversion harness available, PM if interested.

I'd be more concerned as to whether your 88 5.0 is the HO version or standard version. I believe that ALL Mustang 5.0 were HO and were MAF by 88. So if it's 88 and SD I'd be interested in what it came out of and if it's HO or not.

Thats right, all '87+ 5.0L Mustangs came with the HO. As far as mass air, '88 was the tricky year; only California 5.0 HOs had mass air. In '89 all HOs had it. Before '88, all were speed density.

If you're lucky, you can get the mass air swap parts at a junkyard for $150, including an A9L or A9P computer.

Is there some instructions or a list of what has to happen when a 5.0 EFI is transplanted??

I was thinking of doing the T5 conversion at the same time. I believe this will be the easiest way. For the pedals has anyone used the ones from the 88 donor car? This would allow use of the cable clutch etc. ??

They are pretty easy to install, but they hit the 65-66 firewall, so unless you want to "clearance" the firewall with a BFH I'd stay away. 67+ people don't have any problems with fox pedals IIRC
