looking at what would be a nice cam to match up to the AFR 165 non emissions heads (i think these are referred to as competition heads?) I am starting my wish list for some money i will be seeing in the not so distant future. I'm in the process of joining the military, should be shipping out for NAVY boot camp in october.

right now the parts i want to get are:
- C and L 73mm MAF calibrated for 24lb injectors $160
- Stack racing 70mm throttle body $140
- Venom high performance 24lb injectors $220
- AFR 165 competition heads $1,500-1,800

i will also be looking to get a rebuilt T5 to replace my current, so another $900 ballpark.

also what are the difference between these 3 AFR heads? nitrous exhaust? whats the deal Air Flow Research ?

i would like to come home from my first tour with a few boxes that said Summit Racing and American Muscle on them and start modding the car to my tastes. right now it is still pretty much the previous owners car.

I don't have any first-hand experience, but I've heard bad things about the C&L meters. Supposedly they are difficult to tune.

As far as the "nitrous" heads, they probably just have bigger exhaust ports. Nitrous engines like to see a lot of exhaust flow.

k i guess i will keep looking for a MAF censor, all the ones i was seeing on american muscle had the egr spacer as well and i dont need that all of my smog has been deleted. the C&L was the only one that had the MAF alone

The C&L on my car works flawlessly and all of my tuners have been very happy to see it. The reason being is most other aftermarket MAM's come with their own version of electronics that have to mate with your system and have you splicing. The C&L utilizes your stock electronics and in theory that is much better. Stick with C&L you wont regret it. Ford knows how to design their electronics better than any one else.

i some times forget not to listen to the very first person who says something, i will just keep my mind open on these parts im mainly looking for a production cam that would be good in my car. i have a very small cam at the moment it has the slightest of lope, how ever i didnt install the cam and this is what my friends told me just listening to the idle. there is still a chance that it is stock, as i was surprised to find out that my MAF censor is stock and my injectors and most likely throttle body. so the more and more i think about it i believe i have a stock cam and the only real power gaining mods done to my car was a trickflow intake and CAI.

so im wondering what a good cam to add to my part list that would mate well with AFR 165's i'd like to keep it streetable and be at or very near the 300 to the wheels N/A much like 1991lxcoupe was.

+1 i like my C&L, they get bad mouthed a lot though

You might want to consider this cam...Lunati (PN 510A2LUN). MM&FF did a three part article with a 1985 Capri 5.0 project car using the AFR comp heads and the above mentioned cam. I have an 85 Coupe that I'm using the same heads, intake, and cam as they used with a few more mods more than what they did. Granted both our cars are carbureted cars but the motors are roller motors and I think this cam should work well in a fuel injected combination as well. Just a suggestion, but as always do your homework maybe there's a better cam for what you're looking for. With the AFR comp heads and the Lunati 510A2 cam they made 310 hp and 321 torque to the wheels.:nice: My motor is assembled and ready to put back in. I'm only running an alternator - no power steering and I'm also running longtube headers and a Canton pan so I might pick up a couple more but 310 to the wheels is pretty good all motor for that type of mild combo! I was running mid 12s with my GT40Xs, a stock cam and block, and some drag radials. Now I've got all the drag suspension setup, fiberglass hood, K-member kit, more gear and a full slick...hoping to get into something like an 11.80 on the motor.

Anyways, here's the third installment that summs up the upgraded components and the power they made along the way - page four shows the dyno numbers with the AFR heads and Lunati cam.

and i found summit offering the TFS twisted wedge 170 heads for 1,200 dollars, usually the saying is you get what you pay for, will i be getting a better deal with the twisted wedge heads and still be saving between $300-$600 as compared to going with afr 165's.

Sure you get what you pay for but your paying for a as cast head and not a CNC'd head.

im looking at timing chains right now, and JEGS has two one is adjustable and one is not one is 40ish and the other is like 80ish. once i build this motor i don't plan on going into it for a while. why would an adjustable timing chain be good for me?

You only need an adjustable set if you plan on changing the cam timing. We recommend installing our cams straight up since there is 4 degrees advance already ground into the cam.
