Beers Of Stangnet

Managed to restock the beverage shelf in the fridge this weekend...

Pay no attention to those Michelob Ultras on the right...those belong to the girlfriend.

We hosted a cookout Saturday with some friends and I bought a 6-pack of the Goose Island Summer Time Kolsch for the party. That's pretty good as a light summer beer. At the cookout, the guys brought me a 6-pack of the Heavy Seas Cutlass and a 12-pack assortment of the Heavy Seas IPAs. There's also one of their TropiCannons in there somewhere which was pretty good...that's their citrus IPA. I did also sample the other beers throughout the day and enjoyed them all. :nice:

Definitely my favorite of the blended Scotch's. Not that I've had too many.

They say in Scotland that if you don't like Scotch, you just haven't tried the right one yet. They are correct! HUGE variations in both the blends and Single Malts. I've sampled some that tasted about like formaldehyde mixed with paint thinner (Te Bheag), and some that were like Ambrosia from the Gods! (Macallan 18 FTW!!)

I've never been a big Macallan fan, good thing ($$$$$$$$).

I might be able to sucker someone into buying me a bottle of the 25 year old Chivas soon..... Woohoo!

Seems like it's been forever since I've contributed. Anyway...something new from Sam Adams tonight:

Harvest Hefe. It's definitely a fall beer, being offered alongside their usual Octoberfest. This has a mild translucency; not a real heavy hef, and the cinnamon and nutmeg flavors really stand out. They're not overpowering but they're not subtle either. This is also fairly apparent when taking a whiff of the brew.

I like it...not a bad brew at all. Something a little different outside of all the Octoberfests and Pumpkin Ales more commonly seen this time of year.

Thanks, I'll have to look for it. S.A. Octoberfest is my favorite fall beer. :)

For me, it was a bit of a fluke...maybe? I stopped off at the liquor store closest to my house, walked in the door, and there it was right as I walked in. I saw "Hefe" and thought to myself, "SOLD!" I had to check the coolers to see if they had any already cold because I definitely wanted to crack into one as soon as I got home. Couldn't be waiting for them to get chilled, ya know?

Another new one...I was hesitant and curious at the same time when I saw this in the cooler.

Flying Dog's Peach Cobbler Ale from their "Brewhouse Rarities" line. It caught my attention because of the peach...I'm a sucker for peaches. But part of me also wondered just how good could a peach-flavored beer be? They say it's an "Ale with peach, vanilla bean, spices, and natural flavors."

Well, I got a bit of an early start today. Once I got home here (it's not even 1 pm!) I opened one up. I took a whiff and could definitely pick up on the peach aroma and a hint of the vanilla bean. Then took a sip. I am drastically underwhelmed by it. It's not horrible, but just like some of FD's other specialty brews of this nature, the advertised flavors just don't come through. It tastes more like an ale and there's barely even a detectable hint of the other flavors in there. It kind of reminds me of their Dead Rise beer which is flavored with Old Bay seasoning (here in Maryland, Old Bay practically occupies a spot on the table right next to the salt and pepper)...the Old Bay flavoring in that just didn't translate through and it just tasted like a pale ale, unless you got it on tap.

So this stuff....meh. I can get through the rest of the 6-pack but it just isn't anything spectacular to me.

Thanks for the review. I would not buy "peach-flavored" beer.

I DO have Old Bay Seasoning! Love it on fish, and I sometimes sprinkle it on other foods, just because. Good on breaded chicken, too!

Oh yes, us Marylanders will put it on just about anything edible. Wings, popcorn, Utz makes a potato chip seasoned with it, another snack maker does cheese curls laced with Old Bay....yeah, we're crazy about the stuff.

Heavy Seas Treasure Fest. I'm not sure if this is a new offering from the Baltimore-based brewery as I don't recall seeing it with last year's Octoberfest crop. There really isn't much to tell about this though; seems like your typical Octoberfest beer but with a slight hoppiness to it that I don't usually get with other 'fests. I don't think I'd particularly go out of my way to buy this but it's passable and I wouldn't turn it down.

I bought the Sam Adams "Beers of Fall" Sampler Pack yesterday at the store. Included are two bottles of "20 lbs. of Pumpkin."

To be honest, I planned on just pitching these two... BUT... I did pour myself an ounce or two and try it anyway... AND...

It ain't half bad! I'd best describe it as an Amber or Brown Ale, a little darker than most. There's a hint of pumpkin aroma, and possibly the other spices included, but simply put it's a darker version of an Amber Ale, smooth, and a nice change over the "usual." :nice:

I saw that Sam Adams fall sampler too and wondered about that "20 Pounds of Pumpkin." Glad it isn't as overwhelming as it sounds!

I'm also interested in those other 3 in there...the red, black, and honey rye. Let us know what they're like!

Opened the Honey Rye Pale Ale tonight. (I generally don't like Pale Ales...)

Color is similar to a Nut Brown Ale, darker than I expected. Slight hint of the honey and spices, and a touch of bitterness, but not overly so like many of the Pale Ales and IPA's. I probably wouldn't buy a 6-pack of it for myself, but I won't refuse it if someone handed me one.
