hey all, this might be a really dumb question, but i seem to remember reading from somewhere that you can take a mod motor MAF and put it on a 5.0. Is this true? I have access to a lincoln mark viii MAF that i could get for free if i want it. what do you think? would this be better than a C&L 73 mm MAF?

The only MAF that is a one for one swap for a 93 and earlier 5.0 Mustang is the 94-95 Mustang MAF.

The MAF body and sensor are designed to match each other. Therefore you can't swap sensors between different part number MAF bodies and maintain proper calibration. The assembly is designed to match the computer’s internal program, and swapping a different MAF can upset the computer's calibration. In other words, your monster MAF probably won't match the calibration of your 5.0 Mustang computer.

94-95 Mustang GT MAF - $40-$100. It is 70 MM instead of the stock 55 MM on regular stangs built prior to 94. It uses a slip on duct on the side that goes to the throttle body and a 4 bolt flange on the other. You need a flange adapter to fit the stock slip on air ducting that goes to the air box. Wiring plugs right in with no changes. *1 *2

*1.) Metal flange adapter http://www.kustomz.com/cat3.html Buy the TR70 for $44.95. Or spend some time on eBay looking for one that may fit.

*2.) MAF & sensor interchange
The 94-95 Mustang 5.0 MAF & sensor is also found on:
1995-94 Mustang 3.8L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Crown Victoria 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1995-94 Mustang, Mustang Cobra 5.0L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Town Car 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
1994-92 Grand Marquis 4.6L F2VF-12B579-A2A,
Evidently the –A1A, -A2A, AA, etc. on the end of the part number is a minor variant that did not change the operating specs. You should be able to ignore it and have everything work good.

Reread the first line of the second paragraph by JRichker. The sensor in your 55 mm MAF assumes that housing it's in is the stock size. If you put the same sensor in a sewer pipe (any housing larger than stock), the car will run extremely lean because the sensor/EEC have no idea that much more air is being ingested than before. You'd have to try and modify the transfer curve.

This is why even when using the 94-95 MAF assembly, you have to use the 94-95 sensor (you cannot use a fox III sensor in a 94-95 housing). Just accept that the housing and electronics in the meter are a married pair (as JR noted). There are some exceptions but they are seldom encountered.

Good luck.

What they said...

But,
I have pulled the F2VF/70mm MAF from a variety of 4.6 vehicles.
Just take a walk through the j/y....

Jason, good info with the F2 sensor being used on 4.6's. I knew of them on 3.8's but not the V8's.

yes but the meter holes are the same size(19's) so it should work right? I have done this with a 75mm 4.6 maf and put a stock 5.0 sensor on it, and it ran fine, no pinging or anything, im sure it isnt spot on, but yes it does work!! not saying that anyone should do it, but I was bored and it worked for me...

the housing was a 75mm stock housing off of a 4.6 and the black meter was off of a 5.0, we just took the eec5 sensor off and put back on the old eecIV sensor on...

slow95gt,
I don't suppose you know what vehicles one of these 75mm MAF housings could be found on?

This is with a stock 89-90 Mustang MAS (sensor), with the number 'F1ZF', correct?

Do you still have this setup?

The reason I ask, is that I am making a list of a variety of setups to try out, and create a MAF Transfer for...

I wouldn't recommend anyone try this kind of mixing and matching sensors and housings... the odds of getting something to work is pretty slim.

slow95gt has one of the same housings off of my car.

Just because a car seems to run ok or because the adaptive ability allows it to work halfway decently doesn't mean it's 'right'. We harp this because with the retrofits that are 'right', there should be almost no doubt about it. With the other mixing and matching that folks do, it probably isn't optimal nor would it work the same for everyone. This is an important statement to make for searchers.

last question. can i cut that stupid center bar out? excluding the sample tube, of course.

Agreed with Slow95gt. Removing that bar is tantamount to using a bigger housing (or boring out a housing). That bar, an impediment to flow, is accounted for by the factory tune.
