Does it really matter?

Hey guy, I asked my dad if a certain cai on ebay was a good buy or not since it was used. He said(excerpt from email)
"no you don't need it does nothing for performance , you need $$$$expensive$$$$ other parts if you want more power ......................
and unless you buy a new intake manifold and cam and bigger throttle body and bigger injectors and some new big tube headers and new exhaust pipes you won't be making any more power than what you got already .you will also need a new mass air meter calibrated for the bigger injectors .you will also need new heads .
the above stufff will only work when used together not seperate 1 pc at a time and will set you back about 3500 -5000 dollars ."

I totally trust my dad's judgement(not just being a daddy's girl, he knows what he's talking about-most of the time :p)
But what I'd like to know, does it matter if I buy a little at a time or do I really need to buy it all at the same time? I'm not dragging it till it's all done, I don't want to make an ass out of myself! But I'm also not made of money, so I'd like to buy a little at a time and put it together slowly.

I've got on order a new throttle body(bbk75mm). The pipes on there now I believer are 2.5".

Any opinions are greatly appreicated!:nice:

For the most part I agree with what he said, especially regarding the cai, and the price will vary depending on which route you chose. You really don't need to buy everything at once but all of those parts together will get you moving. There are so many different directions you can take and everyone has their own approach.

Since the t-body is already on order I think the intake manifold should be upgraded also.

1. manifold
2. headers
3. mass air
4. heads/injectors (mass air will need to be recalibrated)
5. cam (More and more people seem to be sticking to the stock cam with upgraded rocker arms. I really like that idea for a street car, especially if it's a daily driver.)

You can also look into a top end kit (I hear TFS mentioned a lot): heads/cam/manifold.

Your car basically already has a cai? The only difference with the aftermarket ones are that they are smoother on the inside instead of the stock style accordian and they usually have a K&N type filter (which you have already) other than that, its basically cosmetic appeal. As for the h/c/i, I would save up for it and do it all at once especially if you are going to have to pay someone to do the labor. Can you piece it together over time without any problems? Yes, people do it all the time, but they are also doing the wrenching themselves.

Wont be paying anyone to install anything. Dad is free labor and refuses to allow me to take it to anyone else. But I think I know what everyone is talking about now... I think....

Your dad is a smart guy...listen to him.

For some reason, whenever anyone buys a car and wants to mod it, they always slap a CAI and exhaust on first. Somewhere along the way word got out that these were the "must-have" mods.

do they actually do much? Not really. Not without supporting mods

well, i agree with him also. and if i were u, i would save up all the parts and slap it on at once. not only will everything be in proportion, but itll be a shock of the large amount of power increase. and youll be surprised. rather than feeling a gradual change.

Yeah, your dad has got it right on the head.

That was the first mod I bought for my car. I also couldn't do anything major until i was 18 and it was mine. For horsepower increases, I say B/S. But honestly i did notice an increased throttle response which was fun, but no hp increase.
