EFI vs Carb

I was talking to a local guy and was telling him that my goal would be to put down between 500-600 hp/tq to the wheels in an n/a engine. He said he could do it with the right parts and asked me to consider going carb, he said it was less crap to work with. What you guys think? I'm thinking of a 393 stroker.

I put down 438/476 with a 418.. this was on the first tune. I had some issues with my CAI that i was going to fix and go back. Hopeing for a bit more power. I had a realitively mild hyd roller cam. Im sure i could have made alot more power with a solid roller and spining the motor over 6k.

This was EFI... I wouldnt go carb if you like driving your car on the street. I really dont see any benefit to going carb. For me i like my car to start right up, idle steady and so on.

But everyone is different. What bothers me may not bother you. Do alot of research before you make your decision. Alot of people think its "Cheaper" to go carb, but really look into it cause going carb and doing it the right way will probably equal the money you will spend going EFI with a tune. Plus you get to avoid the head aches of running new fuel lines and dealing with the fuel tank.

And i agree with green. You might as well go as big as you can....
 
Please elaborate. The reason I'm asking is cause I've seen several with a lot of cubes putting down the same amount of hp/tq as the cubic inches they have. 418ci putting out 4xx hp/tq.

FYI, it won't be a daily driver but I do want a/c & p/s and to be able to drive it on cruises and things like that.
 
I don't want to go too big. If I can pull out these numbers from a 347, I would, but I realize that I would be giving up driveablity with lower cubes due to higher compression and a more radical cam. So 418-393 stroker sounds about right.

How much power you think you can get out with your combo Yellow?

Im not sure what you want me to elborate on. But my combo was : FTI cam, afr225's, trickflow box intake, kooks 1-7/8 headers to 3 inch x pipe, 80 or 85mm tbody (cant remember), 42lb injectors, 255 intank pump. Had a local guy tune it.. The drivability was great..

Check out low 5.0's combo, he has all the same stuff i had except i believe his FTI cam was a bit more aggressive and he has a victor 5.8 intake instead of the trickflow i had.

It isnt cheap to build one of these setups, thats for sure! I believe the heads alone were 2k+ from ED C.

Anymore questions that ask.

Oh and you can easily make 500rwhp, just depends on how you want the drivabilty to be and to what rpms you want to spin the motor. I was making peak hp around 5500.

BULL**** ... 500 RWH is NOT attainable on pump gas. Even with all the engine mods in the world and a blower ... not happening.
For that kind of power you will need to dump the EFI, and go with a high compression setup running a 4 BBL carb.
500 RWH will require at least 600 - 625 HP at the crank. Forget about getting that with EFI and pump gas.

I would go with the EFI Spyder intake on a 427. With the right heads and cam you can make 500+ easy.

the problem with making 500 at the wheels with a 347 is that a stock block probably won't last very long. people usually say 450-500 flywheel is around the max of what a stock block can handle reliably.

you could even hit 500 with a 351, but it would have to be pretty agressive.

i was looking at 393s mainly because chp has a 393 short block for $2199. the 408/427s cost more.

or you can build your own 393 short block with a roller block for about $1800, or less if you can find a block and get it machined for less than $900. Allen motorsports (ebay) sells prepped 351 blocks for $595 ($85 ship) with roller conversion for $200 more. Stage 3 sells 393 kits for $900 on ebay.

No, it wasn't sarcastic, and I don't care what you're running ... 500+ RWH on pump gas isn't happenening.

Hey man sorry to burst your bubble but IT IS possible to run up to 500 RWH on pump gas it has to be the highest octane you can buy at a gas station there are people on these forums that have done that it all has to do with compression and tune .End of story

There are several people on here hitting mid 400s RWHP on the stock block...a 351 stroked would have NO problem hitting 500rwhp EFI.

it's all in the tune.

Ever heard of the 03/04 Cobra? I've seen plenty of them right at 500RWHP on 93 octane. I've also seen a few 400+ cube windsors right at 500rwhp around these boards and the corral. I know there's a few guys on here that's made 500+ with a turbo/supercharger as well.
