I need some pointers.. gonna take the cobra out this weekend to dragstrip.. never driven the car hard.. wanna know how to:
1) do a burnout
2) how to powershift (should I or should I not?)
3) what rpm to launch at (street tires and slick)

got 494 rwhp no suspn mod and it's covert. thanks guys! :nice:

All that HP and you don't know how ot do a burnout?

To do a burnout in a manual trans car, you have you use you one foot to control the clutch and brake, and the other to control the gas, or gas/brake and the other clutch. I usually use the heel of my left foot to press down on the brake and my toes of my left foot for the clutch and use my right foot for the gas (duh).
If I where you, I would not chance powershifting. Especiially with that kinda power going through a stock trans (assuming its stock). While your foot is going down on the clutch, start to pull (or push) the knob, get yourself in sync. With street tires, i'd say launch around 2500-3000 rpms, but don't let the clutch fly, ride it a little bit, just enough so you don't shock the rear end and just sit there and spin tire, but enough to get a good grip. Remember, a little tire spin is okay, if your not spinning tire, you're not launching hard enough. Thats whats great about manual trans cars, you can control the amount of power being put to the ground with clutch input.
If lanching with slicks (which from reading posts around here: the rear won't hold up to slicks) but if the rear COULD hold, i'd say around 3500 rpm or more, and let out the clutch more aggressively.

I just recently learned how to a burnout and this is what I do...

I rev up to about 3000-3500k and dump the clutch and then put pressure on the brake with that same foot (left foot). When you dump the clutch it will make the tires spin and by pressing the brake it will keep you from going forward. Just keep giving it gas the whole time but hold the rpms, I usually hold them around 4500 or a bit more. If the backend tries to slide out just press on the brake harder. It only took me a couple tries to master it but I killed it probably 6 times in the process lol. Just gotta get use to doing it cuz it feels very weird at first.

Here's my clip of it: burnout at the track (not the best but im still a noobie :p)

As far as powershifting goes, tried that for the first time the other night at the track.. if I were you I wouldn't try it just yet. I would first get use to doing the burnout, stanging, shifting, and just driving down the track. Once you think you're ready you could try to powershift. The main thing is to NOT miss a gear! ;) It could be very dangerous for your car because your RPMs climb when you shift instead of drop, you miss a gear and they still climb.. well you can imagine would the result would be :)

Good luck to ya!! Post your times!

494HP, no suspension mods and it's a heavy vert?

First, I suspect you're going to break something unless you're very careful. At that power, it's a fine line between vaporizing the tires and hooking and breaking something. If it's an 03-04 and you're bolting slicks on you might be trailering it home.

Second, with a stock suspension and that kind of power, the car's going to be a handful. Are you've never driven it "hard"?

My advice, lame as it may sound: work up to the low 12s (or whatever) that it's capable of rather than going for "broke" in the first shot. Don't power shift, don't launch for all it's worth and so on until you've gotten a feel for how it's going to launch, what direction it's going to go, what kind of MPH it's capable of and so on.

Do you have a cage? I suspect the track you're going to will require some additional safety equipment given the car's potential...

the car is fast but i usally gun it on the highway, it's an 03 covert and I don't even know the gross weight?4000+, what if I do like a light weight bodyparts, removing the rearseat, and removing the AC (don't really want too) how much lighter?.. I was never pressed with drag racing, I know my car is fast and I'm a street guy but will never really put my car in that type of stress just for a timeslip just wanna try it out once before a turbo upgrade.

This thread is the very reason I pay such high insurance rates :nonono: Please trade that beast for a Civic....what a moron :rlaugh:

Just to let you know I have a perfect record and the only ticket I got was in highschool and that's over ten years ago. If I do gun it on the highway it only a couple of gears and I do it on an open road. Sorry if your insur is high so maybe you should be the one slowing down because I don't have a problem with mine

I predict your "perfect record" is gonna change in the near future if you don't step back a take a look at what you're driving

On edit: maybe moron is too strong of a word.....if you're here to learn then you have my aplogies.....just take it slow and get the necessary safety equipment.

Your doing turbo upgrades and looking to gut your car of some stuff to make it lighter, but you don't know how to even do a burnout or launch it??? Learn the car the way it is before you get a turbo kit and kill some people.

I would do a second gear burnout with that power. just dump the clutch at like 3500rpms and grab the brake quick.. give it some more gas to keep it from stalling. launch around 2500 and ride the clutch some to cut tire spin. powershifts will just hurt your tranny unless you know for sure how to do them. the IRS won't like that kind of abuse anyway. you will easily break into the mid 12's @114 or so.

yeah buddy you need to take it easy and get comfortable with the car if u got all out the first time u go on the track ur probably going to send it into the wall, people with little backgrounds on having bad cars shouldnt go out and buy **** like this for their first thats how u die

yeah second gear would be best i have 4.10s and its a must to do that or it tachs out quick, and yeah u arent going to really push any rpms off the line i would suggest leaving the line with none till u get confindent enought to launch at some rpms and u arent going to be doing to much of that with stock tires, i might not be the best driver but i have cut 1.9s on balding stock goodyears and 1.8s on d/r with stock suspension

the results of a missed shift while powershfting is... you hit the rev limiter and look like a tool .

the results of a missed 2-3 powershift with you going back into first and letting the clutch out is... really really hard bucking while the PCM tries too bring the rpms down from and the engine is way past the limiter. this happend too me once not fun. i still can not belive the 4.6 survived that one. then ran it's best time a few days later.

i have a t-45 in my car and all my shifts when racing are WOT power shifts. plus i do several 1-2 and maybe 2 or so 2-3 WOT powershifts everyday. so far the tranny is holding up . but i know one of these days the tranny is going too give up. even with the car still at stock tourqe levels.

i know some of you may think it's bad too beat on a stang like that. but i bought this car for that purpose. i have a taurus in my driveway for getting back and forth too work.

if you are not afraid of parts breakage then give powershifting a shot. if you depend on your car as a daily driver then i would limit it too track only powershifts.

GODD POINT.. i did'nt think of that. it's always the people that don't know how too use it that can afford to buy bad ass cars. . just take it easy and practice with regular upshifts.

then when you get comfortable with that. work on powershifts. and if you can not afford too blow up a tranny then leave the powershifting alone.

what he means is WHEN you crash that car into a pole sideways you will cause the insurance rates of all mustangs too go up.

a good driving record does not indicate a good driver.it just means you have no tickets either because your lucky or you don't drive much.and that you have not caused a accident yet. i know a lot of step 9 ( in massachusetts thats the best record you can have) that are just awfull drivers that don't speed. my girlfriend is one of them. and when she does speed she is pretty good looking so they let her off without even a writen warning.

just take it easy you got a sweet car. go toot he track run it with a soft launch at first and do normal shifts. then work on getting better.

 a TURBO upgrade?!?! Dude, no offense but learn how to drive AND DO SOME SUSPENSION WORK! You have like 450hp now and you are going to ADD a turbo (!!??!) yet you dont know how to drive the car yet?

Bro, thats MORE than enouch power for you right now. Just learn how to drive it first. Don't use massive amounts of hp to conteract bad driving. What do you need all that power for anyway if you dont go to the strip and just keep it a street car? Thats looking for trouble... :nonono:
