Hello all. just a few weeks ago i got a mustang from a guy for like $300. good deal. It has a 2bl 302 in it and the stang is an 88. But i cant find a mustang trans for it anywhere in my area salvage yards. And i was woundering is the 1988 thunderbird trans the same as the mustang trans the auto one i mean. I have been told all thats different is the linkage. i was just woundering because i can get a really good 1988 transmission for little or nothen out of an v8 thunderbird.

well, if you can get it for nothing than buy it... then if it doesn't fit, sell it on ebay. i don't know exactly if they fit or not, I would assume so, and agree that the linkage would be different. So... good luck and welcome to stangnet, usually people around here are more helpful, but lately their slackin'

i went to auto zone and the computer showed up with the same tail shaft or somthing lenth. but its also said that i can take the linkage off the mustang trans and put it on the tbird's trans or go to the ford dealer and buy linkage for about $20 or so. im just on a tight budget and trying to save as much cash as i can . also the motor in it is a under powered 302 out of an 1979 thunderbird. But im sure at least a few boltons can go on it .... can it?

what will make a big difference is getting rid of that heavy cast iron intake manifold and getting one of the Edelbrock aluminum ones, like the Performer RPM, then get a nice 4 barrel carb, that is what I would do. Then you can do heads, cam, roller rockers, headers, exhaust, rear end gears....blah blah blah

check out my link in my signature... on the second page is my 84 stang, same thing you got... check that out. I think your heads off the 88 will fit, but check with someone else before... I would get a set of 1.6 rockers and an iskedrian cam. Also, I got my intake manifold new from edelbrock for 125.00, just shop around, look on ebay and stuff. Also, you can port those heads off the 88 and also mill them to get a little extra power. But my pistons had valve cuts in them so I could run the E cam with 1.7's, just do a little setup and check out my signature.

A 1980 thunderbird had a 255 ci V8 in 80-81 just like the mustangs did those years. Better make sure it isnt one of them.
