i got a set of gt-40p heads and intake for $100. i had to pull them myself as part of the deal. i know about the special headers they take, but i cant justify spending almost $400 on a set of p specific shorties that are bare steel. so i look at long tubes, i cringe when i think about installing long tubes on a automatic 5.0...
should i just grow a pair and use the p's with long tubes or see if i can sell/trade them for some regular gt-40's?

Don't know what kind of gains your trying to make with the P's. They are OK, a tad better than stock E7's. The intake is excellent vs. the stock intake though (much larger ports, more air velocity). These parts won't set the World on fire but if you have them might as well use them. If not you got a good deal so sell it all and buy aluminum heads. Probably what I would do. You're right, P specific headers? They will cost more than what you have into the entire kit plus you will need to get them ceramic coated (see your other exhaust thread).

There are other headers that will work with 90* boots on the wires and protectors. I know the BBK shorties will work like that. You can prob buy a set for $50

Honestly, for $100 you are ahead of the game. Spend $100 on upgraded springs, $50 on some headers and slap them on. $200 for a nice gain will be worth it.

And then when you upgrade in the future, sell the intake for $75-100 and the heads for $200-250 and the headers and call it a day

what bbk shorties? from what ive read you have to use p specific headers or mac or bbk long tubes.

as far as aluminum heads goes, idk if i want to mess with aluminum heads. reason being mainly have to use stud mounted rockers and adjust the valves. idk if i want to get into that. with the combination of the 2, looking at a minimum of $1000-$1200 if i shop real hard, and all that for an extra 50-70 h.p. when i can get a used blower set up for the same price and mess with boost or i can piece together a turbo set up for around the same price as aluminum heads and put down more power. my car is a convertible mostly a street driven, but will spend more time in the garage, i just want to put my money in the right areas.

when i build by track car in a few years then ill build a high reving, high port, boosted with aluminum heads if i desire to

i dont want to turn this thread into a war

If it was me, I'd sell them for more than I have into them on eBay and get some aluminum heads. Stud mounted rockers don't need adjustment with a hydraulic roller cam. You find zero lash, tighten the nut 1/2-3/4 turn and lock them down. You're done. They don't have to be touched again. If you don't mind used parts, there's some TFS heads on Corral for sale for a grand. Someone's selling a NIB set for $1060, too. And that's just the first page of Corral's Windsor Engine Parts classifieds.

I have BBK shortys and GT40Ps on the blue car. Had to run a 104 (shorty)plug and a 90 degree boot on cylinder 7, but havent had any problems. Its not comfortable, but I dont have to remove the headers to remove my plugs.

That is one thing that has made me think twice about the P heads myself. I saw a good deal on some but I passed because of the header issues and I don't want to deal with burnt spark plug wires and hard to access plugs. I had a LT1 F-body once, got my fill of that. I had Thumper ported E7's once which were a bit better than GT40P's but as much as I paid when it was all said and done, I should have gone with a AFR or even base TFS headed setup. I would say they are a good upgrade for the money though, just not the upgrade some describe.

With the GT40P's you will to upgrade the valve springs, get headers that will work, and spark plug wires that will work. Don't forget gaskets, head bolts, and all the other misc things. Lots of labor too.

Don't forget:

well labor isnt really a issue..on my last car i put in a 96 explorer motor, installed the tfs springs myself with the stage 1 cam and did a bunch of other little mods myself too and that ran a 13.4 @107 with 2.25 60ft. but having a convertible i know them numbers will change especially with a auto. so the excedrin i wont need. the only problem that i see with these heads is the header issues. im not a fan of buying s expensive set of headers just to take a hammer to make them fit. i think im pretty much stuck with going with long tubes, i think its a waste buying unequal lengths. i really want to use equal length shorties cause i like the way they look in the engine bay but i know i cant use them with the P heads. i just would like to use the P heads cause i would have practically nothing into them. remember, im not building a race car here, just a nice street/show car

does anybody have a underneath pic of there long tubes with an aod. i just wanna see the clearance?
