I have an opportunity to purchase an 88 gt 5.0 5 speed transmission for $100.00 to put in my 66 coupe that presently has a toploader 4 speed. The benefit of overdrive would be nice. Only problem is that seller informs me that tranny whines in 1st and 5th. For the price, I feel it is worthwhile to rebuild as I have seen warrantied trannies go for $500~650. Does anyone have any advice as to do it yourself cost of rebuilding and who has best prices on rebuild kits and hard parts? Brian

My advice to you is: Keep the Toploader. It'll handle twice the torque that T-5 will and for what you'll spend on the swap, you can buy a LOT of gas. Or do the swap and give me the Toploader

Shipping to Tn would be cheaper so send it to me. I would try posting in the fox area, much more T5 knowledge there.

No, don't post it 5.0 Tech......search first. It has been covered quite a few times. I wouldn't sweat the T5 being weaker. Yeah the Toploader can take a brutal amount of torque, but a '66 weighs less than a Fox body by several hundred pounds. That really helps take some strain off the trans. An '88 GT 5.0 would also have a World Class, which is the more preferable T5.

I saw in one of pazcarguy's past threads that he has a '70 Boss 302 Toploader.....is that a close-ratio? If it is, that could be a reason for wanting a T5 if his '66 is a street car.
