Tire Sizes

Can someone explain to me how to decifer tire sizes, what numbers mean what. im running 235/60R14, what numbers tell me how tall wide and whats the third number for? what do i need to look for, for a cupple inches higher/wider

235 is the width of the tread in mm, 60 is the hieght of the sidewall based on percent of the tread width, R14 is Rim size in inches.

235/60R14 = 2(235 x .6) / 25.4 + 14 = 25.10 inch tire height.

You multiply 235 x 6 by two because there are two sidewalls and divide that by 25.4 to convert to inch so you can add that to your rim size.

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters. The 2nd number is the side wall height in percentage. (235/60/14) So wall height is 60% of 235mm. The final number is 14 inches which this the size of the diameter of the rim.

flipin desiners, whycant they just say 12 1/8 in. wide and 4 in. wall....the r14 i like.... or12 1/8-4R14

ok to correct a mistake, the 235 indicates the SECTION WIDTH not the tread width of the tire. the section width is the widest part of the tire, and does change a bit with rim width, but the number is figured on the design width of the rim.
