Which Oil is the King of the Hill?

I have used Mobile 1 for the last 11,000 miles (dont know what the previous owner used) and i am interested to see how the engine looks when i tear it apart for the headswap. The car currently has 70,000 miles on it. I use Mobile 1 5W-20

Valvoline dino oil, it's not as sophisticated and trendy as mobil 1. But noone ever ever has a problem with it. It is plain not worth the extra money to go with synthetics. And yes you can mix if you have to (as long as it's the same weight of course) and there is no problem switching back. I know I have done it.

ah valvoline...possibly teh WORST name brand oil on the market... weak addative package, decfent basestocks, overpriced

I use M1 5W-30 full synth w/ a motorcraft or Purolator filter.

as mentioned above, the first number is the oil weight when cold, the higher number is the weight when hot

 Never had 1 single problem and I've been using Volvoline for almost 17 years! My dads uncle has a 64 Dodge 383 4bbl with ove 350,000 miles on it. It still has the origional cam, lifters, pistons, rings, bearings, rocker arms and pushrods. The lower half of the motor hasn't even been taken apart. SAE 30w is all he's ever used in it. That's 1 reason I havn't been sucked in to all the :bs: about how geart synthetics are!

P.S. I buy 4-5 cases of Valvoline 5w20 at Meijers for $16 when it's on sale. Regular price is $20 a case. Yeah that's real overpriced!

Yeah I would go with mobil one. I have seen the inside of engines that has had monil 1 and castrol. Yeah a motor will run with castrol but take you motor apart and you will never use it again. Castrol has a real bad problem with sludge. Something else is don't use anything over 10-30 because if the hot rated viscosity is over 30 then the lash adj. will not get the proper oiling because the oil is to thick. If the top end of the motor isn't recieving oil then you are about to run into some problems.

Just goes to show I was totally misinformed and didn't know what I was talking about even though I thought I did.

You ALL (me included) need to thank the people who set us straight.

You ladies/gentlemen thank you for the CORRECT info who gave it. You ladies/gentlemen who received the wrong info from me. I apologize.

Amsoil has a warranty on their product (it's that good). If you engine failes due to their oil, they pick up the repairs costs. That is with a 25,000 mile or one year change interval. http://www.amsoil.com/warranty.htm

Only if you use the right Amsoil product. I use Amsoil 5w-20 and its reccomended change interval is 7,500 miles. I actually change it every 5,000 since I use a motorcraft OEM filter.

conventional oils (non synthetics) have solvents in them. If you condition your engine with synthetics (after initial break in with convential oil) and then switch back you run the high risk of breaking down piston rings and bearings.

I think.

if that were the case, the piston rings and bearings would break down in every car that comes stock with dino oil.

I'm switching to Mobil1 when I hit 1k miles for my first oil change. The "High Performance" oils, you kind of have to wonder if you're trading long term engine protection for short term power gains. Not worth the risk IMO.
