So two more years of not driving his car? lol.

Yeah definitely not. I'm thinking partial wire tuck, replace cruddy brake lines and vac hoses, clean up and/or reloom existing wire, and give it a respray just to make it look nice. Pretty much a quick resto.

Filling holes and shaving the bay is not in the cards. I would like the car to at least move on it's own power in 2020. It's not a show car...but i just needed to freshen things up.

Just a reminder as to what I started with.

My dist is currently in pieces. Trying to decide my plan for that. SO having something to block the hole is a bonus, but wasn't my intention for buying that particular tool. It was the cheapest on Amazon prime ;)

Here's my plan for the next couple weeks. Let me know if this does or doesn't make sense.

  1. Set lifter preload and lock everything down
  2. Dump some oil in the pan, prime the system and check pressure and that all 16 lifters are sending oil up properly
  3. Get everything nice and lubed and bolt the stock valve covers on to keep everything clean
  4. work on test fitting the upper manifold (hardware, gaskets, brackets, paint, etc)
At that point, the main engine is done. I bought a stand from Stumpy's Fab works that will allow me to set the engine down on the ground and bolt the trans on https://www.stumpysfabworks.com/

Only two major items left to buy are below. These can be purchased at any time since they can be installed later.
  • Valve covers (I think I know what style i'm going to)
  • Headers (or wrap my current headers)

At that point my plan is:

  1. Install new rear main seal and sleeve on crank
  2. Reinstall flywheel, clutch, pressure plate. New ARP hardware
  3. clean/paint bellhousing and reinstall
  4. check bellhousing index (because It easy to check at this point)
  5. install starter
  6. Install transmission
Goes without saying that everything above will be cleaned/painted as needed. my 5-spd conversion really only has about 1-1.5k miles on it since install. Flywheel and clutch look to be in great shape so they will be going back in.

And then i'm done. Engine/trans will get shoved in the corner as one unit until ready to be put in. Seems like an easy list, but trying not to rush so that i don't make any stupid mistakes not that there is much to do involving measuring and checking specs....already done most of that.

ANd then it's on to working on the engine bay, fixing my frame rails, painting the bay, and installing the k-member. As much as i had fun doing the engine, i wouldn't mind changing gears and working on the car.

And, reinstalling the A/C with R-12 is also on the agenda.

At this rate, I hope the car is driving by the fall

Pass side valve cover doesn’t fit. Not even close with the baffle removed.

So I ordered my valve covers. Should be here next week along with fresh gaskets.

Also measured and ordered some hardware for bolting the intake on as well as the other brackets and such.

Priming the engine after setting preload was no big deal. All 16 valves began to ooze oil after 10-15 seconds. I had one valve with a very strong stream. Reset preload on that one and the second time it was more in line with the other 15. Interesting.

I’ll wait til engine is in car to bolt on all the brackets. They need to come off anyway. Next up is to put engine down and work on RMS/flywheel/clutch/bellhousing and bolt trans on

What valve covers did you decide on?

NOT edis... with your skills and available tools we can turn the distributor onto a dual sync very easily using the pip that is already in it.. or very cleanly with a 94-95 unit. Then coil packs of your choice with a built in igniter... there are some very good VW coils that will do the job or even do individual cnp with ls coils. just saying options are there

Are you willing to update the Bolt Reference Thread with the ARP bolt part numbers from McMaster for the rest of us? I am refreshing my engine for the red mustang, and will be replacing some of the hardware as well.

I can try. Problem is my invoices are all jumbled up so I don’t know what bolts went where. Since they are installed I can’t remove to measure.

I’ll givr it a shot though
