I just bought a 91 GT that been sitting for 10 yrs w 84 K on the clock....it has no keys....Whats the best way to get some? On a Toyota from this era you take the passenger side door lock to a locksmith and $15 later you have a key.
Whats the trick for a Mustang?

I might have the part number for an OEM ignition but it seems like they’ve been recently discontinued. Might be able to find one on eBay with that part number

edit: here’s the oem ignition. I got mine from NPD. There's a few on ebay now and price has gone up a bit.

A long time ago, I lost the keys to an 85 Capri I had, the lock smith wanted $100 to come out, plus $20 to make the key. I removed the steering column and took it to him and he made the key for $20.

If you don't have the ignition key it's hard to get the column switch out, there used to be key code service companies that I could buy the key code for nearly every American car made, I don't know if they are still around, I can look into it, the factory only kept key codes for 10 years,
Of course my slow two finger typing style afforded gravytrain, err, I mean Ohiodog, crap, I washed my hands and I can't do a thing with them now, GRAVYDOG!!! There, anyway he suggested the most economical way to resolve this dilemma without drilling out the pin on the column and possibly damaging the column.

Changing the ign lock is a no go, as its it cant be done w/o any keys except by drilling, and it provides no keys for doors. Guess I will pay to have a locksmith come out....
 
I had to swap the ignition cylinder in my II without a key. What I did was used my GT key, jiggled it around a bunch while trying to turn it. It found a sweet spot and turned so I could depress the locking pin. If you have another Ford key of that style I'd suggest giving that a try first. It might save you a bunch of $$$.....
 
I thought I read that the actual combination of door/ignition keys from the 1980's Fords isn't really that much.

If you went to a Fox mustang show, and tried your keys in other cars, you would likely find another car where your door key worked in some, and the ignition key worked in another.

Obviously that doesn't help here, but a locksmith may be able to do something for you based on the fact that there aren't that many keys to choose from.

Back in the day, a local junkyard here would sell you a coffee can full of Ford keys, or GM keys or whatever for like $10. If none from the can worked, they would swap it for another can until you found a key that would work.
 
Even if I find a key that will turn the ign. lock, that does not solve the PATS problem....I don't guess there is a cheap fix to this problem.
It really doesn't matter I got this car way cheap $1500, its a GT, and it only has 84K on it and is bone stock 5 sp. It has been sitting for the past 6-8 yrs. It will clean up and flip for a real nice profit.
 
Unfamiliar with what you mean by "PATS"

If you need to remove the ignition cylinder, that's what I did. I just happened to have another Ford key laying around. As was said earlier, Ford could only make keys in so many patterns and most of them are fairly close. Jiggling the key to get the tumblers to cooperate seems to have worked for other people, Google searches came up with that solution for me when I had to do this. I tried it and it worked for me. Like I said, if you have another key laying around you're not out anything but time if you try it. And a new ignition lock cylinder is pretty cheap compared to a locksmith making a house call - $20 gets you a new cylinder with key, O'Reilly's might even be cheaper...

But since I don't know what you're talking about concerning "PATS", maybe I'm wrong....? :shrug:

A 1991 GT doesn't have a PATS system. That didn't come into effect until 1996

If you could bust the ignition lock, you could start the car with a pair of pliers. There's really not much to it. Once you find a key, the car will start. Or buy the $20 ignition lock and find a sharp set of drill bits.

Doesn't solve the door/hatch key issue though, i do not know of anyway around that without calling a smith and seeing if they can cut you a key for it

Once the ignition is sorted, the rest is just removing the lock cylinder and taking them to a locksmith for new keys OR just replacing them as well. :shrug:

No security on a 91, and I think the door/hatch are different keys, am I wrong?
My 89 has a round head door/hatch key. I believe the ssp cars had one key for everything though.

Doors, hatch/trunk and glovebox are all one key. The glovebox one gets forgotten all the time as these cars have been parted out and pieced together. The cylinder from the glovebox can easily be removed and swapped.

The SSP cars do have one key for everything. PPI used to sell the SSP key sets, but not sure if they have any more. You'll have to call up and inquire. They wanted big $$$ for them though.
 
problem solved, Drilled the ign lock, and installed new one. My fuel pump runs constantly, good for getting the 6 yr old fuel out, but a problem....Good thing I have a ECU capacitor replacement kit. Hopefully it will solve that problem.

Car just got $1000 more expensive. Ordered a bunch of interior stuff from LMR to get it right. Mainly headliner and door panels. Car is cleaning up nicely, got the pressure washer out and the engine bay/door jambs, etc look much better. Dropped the fuel tank today. Should get a fuel pump/strainer Mon, got a filter today, will put the capacitors in the ECU tomm. Hopefully Mon we see if it runs. It cranks fine ATM. I was told it was a fine running and driving car when parked. Need to find a set of Pony wheels and paint em white. Car appears to be 100% stock except for the $900 Cervini ram air hood. (Hood is $640 and under hood ram air kit is another $280) and the wheels.
