Story behind the pictures:
To make a long story a little bit shorter. There is a guy that lives in my town that owns an '05 Mustang GT and doesn't know a whole lot about cars but he always trys to have something faster than everyone else. He has owned a '01 Cobra, '03 cobra, '04 Cobra, '0 Lightning, and now he owns an '05 Mustang GT. He took the GT and had a vortech blower and a Zex nitrous kit put on it. He was running 10lbs. of boost and a 50 shot. I raced him the same week he had it put on and beat him by about a car length but he wasn't spraying. A friend of mine road with him and said the he could hear it detonating over my exhaust at full throttle. He said it sounded like there were marbles in the cylinders but this guy doesn't know what that sound means and doesn't really care if he blows up the bottom end b/c he has money. So last night he went out to race another friend of our's who has an 03 cobra. As they were racing the '03 had about a car and a half on the 05 then the 05 sprayed and pulled hard on the 03 and then the enevatable happened... BOOM!!!!

Hey, everybody wants to be fast, and some people are not as smart as others when it comes to these cars... Maybe we can figure out what exactly what was the problem... Bad tune, no intercooler, etc? And then, what failed.

We all can guess it was a bad mix on a stock bottom end, but it would be better if we could figure it out for sure what failed etc...

The problem was the tune. The stock bottom end can handle about 450rwhp IF it is tuned properly.

Definate screw loose with this guy.

Agree. Too little fuel + too much timing ='s BOOM

Not that it really matters at this point, but was it an intercooled Vortech?

I would have thought a 50 shot wouldnt be considered foolish, as long as the car was tuned properly afterwards.. I dont understand why people think the guy is an idiot, for trying to push the envelope.. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose.. If he was successful most of you would have been giving him the thumbs up.. But since he had bad luck, some of you want to kick him when he is down..

I dont see anyone kicking John Force when he blows an engine because it was setup wrong..

Some of you need to grow up! You dont need to call people dumbies when things dont go right.. You just pick up the pieces and try again.. Thats it! No need to be kicked by a bunch of losers..

Yea, I dont want to hate on the guy. I want to supercharge one day and I want to make sure this doesnt happen to me or any other guys trying to supercharge their 05 if possible... though i'll never do nitrous...

I was looking at prices on parts like pistons and other engine internals and they did not seem to expensive. Is the killer the cost of labor to beef up your stock internals? If not, seems like maybe spending $800 to beef up your engine then adding a blower might be money well spent?

Actually, I would have called him a dumby for running just a blower with a poor tune. The guy wasnt thinking and plenty of us know his type. If I decided to toss in the 150hp jets on my setup without new plugs with the proper gap and blew it up I deserve to be laughed at.

You must also read that the engine was detonating before he hit the button. That is pretty stupid.

In this situation, yes he was very foolish.. Forcing the issue even though he had a true sign of a problem...

with really good tunes and a bunch of dyno time. notice that Bircham is using high octane fuel, not pump gas, for his numbers. A lot of it is in the tune. Could that guy have spared his motor if he had it tuned properly? Yes, I believe he could have even with the nitrous spray on top of the SC.

What you are seeing there is easy with these motors, that being the achievment of big numbers. As far as longevity, it is not gonna live long with stock internals and those numbers. And how they consider 100 octane not race fuel is beyond me. I don't even know where to get 100 octane but at speed shops and raceways.

Any way, the 05 can achieve huge #'s easily but 450rwhp on stock internals is what many speed shops (KB etc) are saying for a daily driver. I know I would be basket case worrying when it would pop if I had that set up. That is why I dumped my 99 and got the Cobra.

Pushing the envelope is great, it gives us better cars, problem here is he pushed without any logic or self control. This isn't bad luck, bad luck is the fuel pump going out and the car running lean. He just ignored signs and pushed a hurting motor to the point of breaking. That my freinds should qualify as idiocy. And why care, he will probably admit he was an idiot for doing it, I would.

And John Force doesn't blow motors in a street car. Race cars are race cars and there was another motor on a stand at the trailor and two more in it. And it was paid for by a sponsor. If it is so cool, lets strap some stuff to your car and see how far it gets before we blow it, even if it cries for help by detonating, we'll just keep pushing. It's just a motor, let's push it.

there are two gas stations down the street from me that sell 100 octane. they also have leaded racing gas (i think it is 114), but they wont let you pump that directly into your car, only gas cans.

LOL!! We will not be strapping anything to my car, unless its strapped on and tuned at a dyno! LOL!!

Like I said, he was foolish to make the run when people kept saying his car was detonating..
