Do 2v 4.6's in the 96-98 have more HP potential than a 5.0?

When i did the PI head swap in my old 98 i ended up with 280hp 307tq, the guy that did the tune said if i had long tubes i would have reached the 300 mark. I ended up spending around 3000 with the tune and upgrading the cams to comp 262's.

first one:

aftermarket cams (not sure on specs, just know that they were somewhat expensive), stock PI heads (no work done)

second setup:

stock cams, LTs, Stage 2 ported PI heads

sorry I can't be more specific...I'm not knowledgeable with the 4.6 crowd. One thing I found out is that a lot of people like to post their dyno results without actually putting sheets up :rolleyes:

It does appear with cams, headwork and LTs they can be easily over 300RWHP though...

Thats why I love the bottle, its there when you want it to be INSANE. 100hp might make 85-100 rwhp but make 125-140 extra ftlbs over n/a. Feels like the motor wants to jump out ahead of the car.

It is deff. crack for the car and gearhead.
 
Well, I meant taht my torque is spot on with that 4.6. I don't have anything out of the ordinary of any other H/C/I. So my point is that there is relatively no difference in the engines and their low end comparetively speaking. So the fact that it hits 300FT pds at 3750 is so close to ours that it is negligable... Now as tostock for stock, I dunno..

i had a choice between the 4.6 and the 5.0... i went 5.0 because you can go basically anywhere even like a yardsale and find parts... i went to a fleamarket today and found a set of chrome VC's for $10 but they didnt have the oil fill on the right place :(

I was tired last night when I put up that little comparison and forgot to point out something that can be easily seen here ;)

Things would look very different on the big end if I put up the curves of a typical afr/fti/edel combo as the cats and stock parts I was using did hold things back a bit up there.

but hey ................

My input in this thread is to show there is more to be considered with street car performance than just peak dyno numbers :)

300 to the wheels is not the same for every combo :D

With my experiences with a 98 mustang gt we did a pi head and intake swap, and vt stage 2 cams it took the car from a 14.6 to a 13.1 untuned in the 1.4 mile and thats with a stock car besides cai and 3.73 gears which it had before the hci swap. I feel the 4.6 takes mods just as well as the 5.0 and cost around the same.:shrug: :shrug:

I wouldn't and couldn't disagree with any of that :)

however

Put that heavier mod motored Stang at a steady cruise on the road .......
in 4th gear at say ... 45 mph
and
mat the skinny pedal without up shifting.

Thats where the different torque characteristics of each motor is gonna really be felt ;)

That's going to give more low end and mid range tq..Wait.. I think yu do as well right? So a 4.6 with long tubes can make almost as much TQ as a 5.0 without... But apples to apples... not. Is that a fair analysis?

Grady, my combo doesn't hit 300ftlbs of TQ until 3500rpms, but it definitely doesn't lack anything down low.

I will try and find my mom's dyno graph from her 2001 bullitt. I drove numerous 2V GT's and her can feels SO MUCH stronger than any 2V I ever drove, modded or not. Bone stock with my ET streets I ran a 13.5 at 101 in it.
