How does the cobra Intake (lwr and upr) stand up to the big boys

I have a chance to get a cobra intake lower and upper for pretty damn cheap. Only thing is I am saving up for holley or trickflow h/c/i. I was wondering if I do get this cobra stuff how does it measure up to the major players like holley and trickflow. It is off of a 93 cobra and I have a 92 vert. I know I would still need to change the heads to see some significant gains but will this intake setup with a comparable cam get me some horses? If not I may just pass this by and keep saving. Also aside from the obvious scratches and dents. What other forms of damage should i look for, so I can make sure I am not getting some worthless crap.

ANy advice appreciated.

My plans are to have a pretty bad azz street car. Maybe like 300-320 to the wheels. I doubt I will ever make a run at a track. Or even race anyone for that matter, just want to know the power is there if I need it, ya dig? But I think Ihave already been bit by the speed bug with just the few mods I have done thus far. SO I would like a flexible combo. So if I want to go nuts later I can without having to re-do everything.

So cobra stuff is not very good?? Its kind alike one of those deals that just popped up and I have the money, and I doubt a deal like this will pop up again. Both upper and lower for 200. (well at least that sounds like a deal) Is that worth it??

The Cobra upper and lower will support that much power easily but if you plan on hitting over 400 rwhp plan on a different intake. I am running a ported Explorer upper and lower on my set-up.

the good thing about getting the intake cheap is you can save the rest for more upgrades.( I.E. heads, cam, etc.) But it sounds like you are more interested in a trick flow or holley system. You may not be happy with the cobra intake because whn you do get heads and cam you might have to upgrade the inake as well. Just save your money and get what you really want.

Yeah the cobra manifold can hit that number, but i'd do an rpm manifold personally. I'd at least have the cobra lower ported and have the upper inlet opened up for a 75mm tb.

Just came across a dude selling a holley systamax upper and lower for 400....no heads just the intakes is that a good deal? I looked around and cant seem to find a price for the intakes by themselves.

If I can get 300-320 with the cobra that may be fine (maybe even 350-375). But like someone said it is not what I truly wanted. If this 400 dollar holley setup is a good deal I may jump on it.

Try and chew him down a bit for the holley. Its a NICE manifold when the rest of the combo is set up properly.

holley is nice, but I think it is way too much intake to put on a stock motor if that is your intention and then to install heads and other pieces later. would be a waste of gaskets and time to just install a systemax on a stock motor.

The cobra intake is a great intake. Especially for your current situation and later when you feel the need after heads and cam, you can have it ported easily(do a search for tmoss). The holley(typically find them on supercharged applications) is another good intake but for your buildup over time it will probably hurt your power more than improve. For a stockish or slowly built motors stick with edelbrock performer and the cobra are ideal... IMO... as far as aftermarket intakes are involved. RPMII, Trickflow, and Holley all need the other supporting mods to take adavntage of them... otherwise they will hurt your combo.

yea I am actually not installing these. They will sit in my garage until its time. Iam actually in the middle of modding the drive train, but came across these. Still undecided. The cobra stuff looks good but so does the holley stuff. I may be able to get the holley for 300...

There are plenty of Cobra intake setups pushing 300+ to the wheels. 350+rwhp is a little far fetched for a 302, you'd need a stroker to achieve those numbers N/A, in which case you'll need a bigger intake. I too got my cobra intake for $200, only mine has been ported. Why not just buy it, and later on if you decide to swap intakes again, you can most definitely get $200 back for it.

I recently saw a cobra upper and lower intake go for $500 on ebay. So i would definatly say it's a steal for 200. Whether or not it's what you need may be another story.
Explorers go for about $200 and Cobras slightly higher. It must have been an original Cobra, not a knock-off and had some work, maybe polished and come with injectors and other pieces. Its a $400 piece anywhere brand new. Part# FMS-M-9424-Z51 at Summit.

I think the Cobra upper by itself flows pretty high around 250-260 cfm,but the Cobra lower I think only flows around 210 cfm,so you`re looking at porting it for higher flowing heads.

Maybe Tmoss can verify these flow figures.

Here's a good article on intakes. Go to the site, http://www.andersonfordmotorsport.com/
and open Read Media Articles and look for this one
"February 2000 Intake the Power...Sorting through the Streetable 5.0 Intakes on AFM's DynoJet ".

The test wasn't done on a stock motor, but you can get a good idea of the powerbands of each and observe their differences. Intake selection really depends on your RPM's, Induction Power Adder, and head/cam combination.
