Hey guys, i kno some of you are going to say to search but i searched the forums and didnt find the information that i was looking for. i was curious what the benefits are of running 93 octane over 87 octane, provided your car will run on 87 without pinging. A few people have told me that it burns hotter, so it cleans out all the carbon in your engine? Some told me it makes the engine run better. Some say it makes it faster. What are your opinions on what 93 octane does for an engine. When i went to the track i put 93 octane in and a bottle of octane boost so according to the bottle i should have had about 103 octane in my tank. I didnt really notice any difference over the 87 that was in the tank on the rid there. Provided my car was stock w/cobra intake when i took it to the track. Now im gonig to have a significant amount more done to my motor will it make a difference?

All higher octane means is that it is more resistance to heat. Pinging is when the fuel self-combusts due to heat before the spark plug fires. All of this "burns cleaner" is not because it's a higher octane, but because the higher octane had to go through more refinement process, and during those the refiners decided to add in additives. Higher octane allows you to run a higher timing advancement, like shttygtstang said, because the more timing you run the hotter the engine runs. The hotter the engine runs, the higher change you have of pre-detonation.

octane is a rating on how volitaly (sp) gas is which means how fast it evaporates/burns. Your car will run the fastest with the lowest octane gas that doesnt make it ping. The benifits of running 93 or premium gas is that you can run more aggressive timing also more boost if you have a supercharger or a turbo. So there is no benefit to higher octane fuel unless you need it. Other than that your wasting your $.

In my experience the 5.0 HO likes 93 octane. Mine wil run fine on 87 till I get up to 3500-4000 in 4th gear with the pedal on the floor, then I here a little pinging. I dont go that fast normally so its not a issue. I run 93 because I get better mpg on it, to me that means its helping. Around town I got 14mpg on 87, I get 18mpg or so in the city on 93. Sometimes 20mpg if I drive real easy.

My dad has a 93 T-bird with the same motor, his pings badly on 87 and not so bad on 89. It NEEDS 93 to run right. It still has cats on it too, that might make a difference.
