This what I did today. All day to almost install the fan controller. It’s a nice unit and I can set the temperature for each fan. Very professional looking piece, if anyone ever needs one. I’ve put it under my right wheel well. It came with its own temp sensor and can turn the fans on when the ac is on. I still have some wiring to do, install the fuel pressure regulator and the distributor. Adjust the front coilovers and put the wheel liners back in. I hope to fire it off Sunday

@Davedacarpainter and @madmike1157

Need some assistance with the ignition. I’m having trouble coming up with a distributor and coil that does not need a spark box. I went to Summit in Arlington and bought a stock Ford coil and a PFS 30041 electronic dis. The instruction State it needs to be hooked to a CD box. I don’t have one and really don’t see why my 283hp 302 would need one. I could use some direction on this gentlemen, as I really don’t know what direction to take. Googling it only brings up CD systems

@Noobz347 , I’m running a Holley Street Dominator 600cfm, or as madmike1157 referred to it, “a turd”. Honestly, I never expected to get drug down into a black hole of modifications when I removed the FITech. I would have left it, but it was way oversized for a basically stock 302.

What I would like to do is run just a distributor and coil, the way real cars did back before all the computerized wizardry. Trying to find such a simple solution is like trying to find unicorns, or as we called them in the military, snipe hunts.

The problem I see with junkyard finds for this item (and I love junkyarding) is 30 YO diaphragms, wires and electronics that have “crap-the-bed” written all over them. For many thing the JY is the way to go, but not certain with this.

I’m going to travel once more to Summit and try to explain my needs more clearly. You have to give a model year for them to look things up, so I think that’s where the train left the tracks. I didn’t explain I needed a non-Ford system.

Thanks for your response, Noobz

@karthief , the FITech ran the ignition, timing advance, fans and who knows what else. Between it and the Viper alarm I’ve been chasing systems out wire by wire. In the end, I think I’m better off without it, even though it was really trick. One unit goes and everything is dead on the side of the road.

I looked up the fitech 8 and thats for like mega horsepower, with a switch to carb the simple solution may be a stand alone ignition, or rewire for the old brain box style.

Yeah... I saw that ad as well and researched it long enough to figure out that it's too big for most applications and is not centered around driveability.

@Vettn71

Even though you said you don't want EFI, you should still consider getting a complete EFI system. The biggest reason is going to be the lack of support for your specific year and ease adaptability.

At 285ish FWHP, You would need some 24s or 30s, a 65mm+ TB, and a 70+mm MAF. Since the step from 19s to 30s is a relatively small one, you could easily get away with a tuned MAF versus a chip tune. Obviously, a chip tune would still give you the best resolution for daily driving providing the tuner (persons doing the tune) were any good at all.

I'm going to alter your thread title a bit to draw in some more guys that know more about carb swaps.

Even a lowly stock Duraspark distributor is gonna need an external module to trigger the distributor.

Ive never tried to retrofit the factory box, as it was always replaced w/ a msd box in its place.

If you can get past the size of the thing,...You could buy a standalone chevrolet lookin' HEI distributor as a aftermarket piece, and be done with everything though. Cleaner install, w/o a stupid stand alone coil, dorky lookin' 2' long coil wire stretched from the coil mt pt to the dist, and a menagerie of wires going back and forth between the coil, the dist, and the ign controller.

I appreciate all the input and advice. I’m kind of stuck onto the path I had decided on, as I’ve installed the carb, hooked to my electric fuel pump and Aeromotive pressure regulator, blew gas out of the vents and subsequently bought a Holley fuel pressure regulator with a return so I can use it with a carb. Even with the adjustment all the way out the Aeromotive unit couldn’t regulate the pressure low enough for the Holley Carb.

The problem with going back to a stock ignition configuration I think I stated above. No module, no wiring, no nothing, so I’d be starting from scratch to recreate the system; and it is a system. It relies on the sum of its parts to function. A 30+ YO system would be an issue for me.

I’ve got everything plumbed in and am just lacking the spark part of the equation. I thought about going injected, but that would involve even more snipe hunting with no guarantee of success. I’ve got cut wires all over the car. It had a wire tuck, Viper alarm, FITrch Injection and a swap to a 98 Cobra dash.

Even though I’m fairly comfortable with what I’ve done so far, I can quickly exceed my limits of ability. At this point I want it to run reliably so I can DD it. I’m not happy spending $300 to get here, but at least the wifey is cool with it. She doesn’t want me to drive “her Corvette”, which BTW, was mine until she glommed it

Thanks again
Jim

Quick question for y’all

The tach wire goes to the + or - of the coil? I’ve seen it both wired both ways when doing a search. I didn’t note which side of the coil it was connected to when I pulled the MSD Blaster coil

TIA
