Progress Thread 74 Mustang II - Build as semi-daily driver

He has a car that I would like to own. Solid color that can be polished up nice with just a bunch of elbow grease. No landau top and a nice grill. He needs to put a few more detailed pics so we can see all the glory of the Mustang ll......I just realized he is in Germany. That complicates it a bit.

No problem, I get the death wheel out and cut it into cubes. What parcel size do you prefer :jester:
I also think the issue on the hood scoop is more related to the clear coat. I don't know what did go wrong, but I will fix it with black paint... That is what someone does in his DIY garage, right? It looks also to tame and I like a second color on the car. Honestly my wife talked me into not using black. I also think with the black hood scoop, it is the look I want when sitting in the car :rock:
 
Ford Mustang is one of the favorite American classic cars in Germany. In some rankings it was even in the top 10 beside Porsche, Mercedes and VW Käfer (Beetle). The Mustang is well known from TV and pop culture. I think the first mustang in a movie was in a french film (http://www.ponysite.de/5F08F100145.htm) with Louis de Funes, which is also very popular in Germany:

And I think there is also a very strong connection because of Ford Europe.
The last years where completely crazy and I think there are too many 1gen Mustangs around for my taste. This is why I love the Mustang II and was happy to find such an interesting car, which was already in Germany since the 70ties. If I get it registered there is nothing that holds me back selling my 66 coupe.
In Germany the taxes for cars where very long only depending from engine displacement, and this makes it expensive to run american cars. Since 1997 there is a special tax for classic cars (needs to fulfill some requirements) which is the same amount for every car, since then it was affordable to have an american classic. So it's only around 15% of the normal tax of a 302.

Do you have also a yearly tax on cars like us?
If you mean a registration fee, I'm sure every state does but they differ. Here in Georgia we pay an Ad Valorem tax when the car is first bought, then to keep it registered we have to pay a flat rate annually. In Iowa, we had to pay a flat registration fee annually as well as a tax on the value of the vehicle annually, but it was less than the one time Ad Valorem tax we pay in Georgia and it depreciated over time. I know that Iowa also does not have emissions laws, but here in the Atlanta metro area we have to pass an emissions test for cars 20 years old and newer before we can register. The II is exempt as well as most Fox Mustangs now. All our emissions testing consists of is they plug the car's ECU into their computers to read the codes and they have a tester that tests the gas cap. It takes all of 10 minutes, tops.

Hawaii has inspection, insurance, and Registration fees by vehicular weight and usage.
This fee is due every year. So you find an old mustang you want to own and find out it has 20 yrs back taxes.
It has become cost prohibitive to own.(about 360$x10yrs back tax is $3600 on top of regular fees)
Unpaid parking tickets transfer with the car too so you will have to pay someone elses tickets.
(yes in Hawaii property can be guilty of a crime)

On a side note there gonna start taxing us on Storm Water Runoff, also known as rain. Thats right there gonna start taxing us on the rain that falls on our property, government bastards...

Beautiful! Especially its raining here for next few days. It's just a bit to warm for snow...

I know this registration fee from France (my french colleagues complain about that all the time). We only have the annually tax. For classic cars it's fixed to 192€ (can't complain about that). Corvette C6 is around 405€ a year, which is okayish, if you like such cars. And a car with a 5.0L engine without any catalyst would be around 1300€ if it doesn't fulfill the requirements of a classic car.

Is TÜV concerned with the production year of the engine in the car, or do they just go off the production year of the car?

A classic car must be at least 30 years old. The age is counted since the first registration; model year or build date doesn't count. If it is a import car, they take the first registration day from the country of origin (it is in the export/import papers). Engines can be swapped if they where used within the car model. The TÜV inspector normally don't know where to look for the engine number or casting number behind the starter, if it is an american car. ;)
With some inspectors you can talk about such things, others are not so much into classic cars and then it is likely you will have trouble getting the approval.

Interior is in (mostly). Starts to look like it is a real car again...
