Uh oh. That's the oil pump drive. The camshaft turns the distributor, the distributor turns that shaft, and that shaft turns your oil pump.
You need to shine a light down there and see if you can still see it. If you can't you might have to drop the oil pan.

There is a split spring washer that keeps the drive shaft from coming out of the pump. When you lifted the distributor out it pulled the shaft up, take your socket/extension and put it on the shaft and you can tell if it's still connected to the pump.Yes it looks like its in the oil pump could it have fallen in the right place? Tape it together good, and go slow. You don't want to pull the pan. Pulling the pan is not something you want to do
